Scratchy sound (Mac)

by Reagent X · in ThinkTanks · 12/20/2003 (11:00 am) · 9 replies

Anyone know why the sound is scratchy sometimes when playing TT? Ever since I upgraded several months ago there is an annoying crackling sound. Its not terrible, but I just hooked up some new speakers with a subwoofer and I'm crankin' it up!

Wasn't there some issues with a sound file that is too compressed? Can someone post a good copy of it and instructions on where to put it? I am running TT on a Mac G4 Quicksilver with Panther.

Thanks!

Welcome to Forums, X! You just need new oil for your brakes... use only Brain-a-oil, certified grade 'A' TT oil. Drink twice a day, before playing TT and at 4 in the morning. HB

Thanks Hugobrain...

Actually the scratchy sound seems to be coming when I'm running at full speed (which is most of the time). Anyone else have this problem?

It's official Hugo has lost it.

Sometimes running Jaguar I get it, but only on servers hosted by humans instead of the shockwave and homelan.

And I don't know how to fix it, but I suggest you use diesel for your tank. I do. No strange sounds whatsoever.

Turning the volume down (at the menubar, not the speakers) worked for me. I'm running Panther with the latest updates. Make sure you don't have iTunes running at all.
Oh, and in the Sound Preferences of the "System Preferences," set your Input to Line-In instead of microphone. Not sure why this made a difference.

I strongly suggest that you turn ON iTunes, then make a special playlist of SoundGarden, RadioHead, ACDC, and maybe throw in some Incubus and Linkin Park. Then turn everything up as loud as it will go, turn the lights down, take off most of your clothes, fire up a happy bowl, and PLAY THE HELL out of the game.

Heh, that's one solution. With enough Rob Zombie and GodSmack playing, you probably won't notice any scratching sound from your tank! Actually, it's not a bad idea. In my platoon, we found a way to hook up an MP3 player to the intercom system of the M1A1 so that the track squeaks don't drive us insane on a long road-march. Few things are as glorious as an assault mission to Rammstein music!

If you open the Package Contents of TT, you will find the sound files in Contents:Resources:game:data:sound. Almost all the files are in ogg vorbis format. You will need to either get the ogg vorbis plugin for iTunes, or download a demo copy of MacAMP Lite to play these. Try playing each one and see if one of the sounds causes the scratch you hear. Oddly, some are wav files while others are ogg files. If you decompress an ogg file to a wav file, I don't know if TT will know to use the file if it has a different file extension. Something I may try at a later date.

However, it's probably a lot easier to just use your speakers for something head-slammin. :-P

@TankGirl: Actually, I love to hear the tanks clanking into each other and the engines revving to keep me in the battle! I can visualize your set-up though, but maybe you could post a pic (ha!)? I raise my bowl to you.

@macr0t0r: I opened my sounds folder and I was able to play each sound separately with Audion. The tankidle.ogg file is a little scratchy, so maybe that's it.

Try downloading the demo and playing that ogg file and see if it is still scratchy. You may have a corrupt file. If so, just replace it with the one from the demo and try it out.

Had fun competing with you a couple nights ago. However this tech support is not free. In exchange, you are required to occasionally MISS next time you are blasting my tail off when I have the scrum! :-P
