Demos to the back of the line

If a server is full and theres a few demos in it.

Why not give the paid members the priority to enter the server and kick out a demo or two.

I agree

That's not the way to encourage demo's to buy... adding another incentive to the already tough list of lack of tanks or lack of time is not needed. Sure some of them don't know how to play, but the fewer obstacles placed in their way to buying the better.

I'm with beh here. This has been thought of before.

I think it'll encourage them to buy even more... they get a taste and then it's taken away... It's like teasing them! They'll have to buy just to get in on the action.

As is, Demos can only play 5 minutes at a time. That's why you see demo's come and go so often.

So it's kind of set up already just a little different. The only thing I would suggest is instead of only allowing a demo 5 minutes at a time, allow regulars to auto kick them when the server is full, the way bots are auto kicked as people enter a server of 6 or less.

I wonder what the buy ratio is for Demos... Meaning, how many demo's become owners... I think it should be at least 90%. (9 out of 10)

I don't know if bouncing demos is the best solution here.

I am still fairly new to TT; it has been fun learning how to drive, etc.

One of the big problems with trying to learn or play is the demos. It is bad enough having newbies knocking over the furniture (i.e. bouncing off rocks, slamming into trees, knocking flag off own teammates). The demos make it harder. They want to do battlemode in scrum. They wear out the chat line with garbage.

So, why aren't servers with passwords used more often?

I think I know the big problem right off (to answer my own question):

Doing the password thing by email or IM is too much hassle and too exclusive... My thought/solution here is to put the password in the server name. For example, if I create a "Tanker Server" for scrum, the password is "Tanker". Demos aren't going to get this. It may be easy enough, flexible enough, and temporary enough for frequent players to try typing parts of the server name into the password and get in... and this may not be necessary all the time. Some demos aren't too bad...

I confess that I don't think this is a great solution but possibly workable? I know this won't work for league games.

Welcome to the forums Jim :-) I haven't seen you arround before so I'm assuming your new... What's you're game name???

half of the servers you see online at any given point are already dedicated to owners only. You might recal when you were a demo yourself, there were many servers that you could not enter... It said, "unavailable in Demo, Buy Now". what would be cool is if we as an owner could know which ones were dedicated to us and which ones are open to Demos.

They already get kicked half way threw what would get them to buy they should get the light for single player I was very surprised at the speed of the light it doesnt look that fast sitting in a medium.

I would like to see some servers that have access based
on something like the combat ratio that is tracked now.
That way "experienced" players could retreat to a server
of like talented tankers from time to time.
Before everyone jumps in with "It helps new players to play
against the vets...." I understand and agree with that. My
desire is to be able to jump into a game of good players from
time to time and know that the other players are essentialy as
good or better than me. I will still visit the other servers
and "educate" the newbies.
I have very little time these days to play and want to try
and get the most out of that time.

I totally agree, Demos should be kicked out in a full server if a registered player desires to enter the game.

registered ploayers should have more privilage to join a server of their choice without demo players taking all the space for the registered players.

Example: I wanted to join Michael's server the other day (because he hosts my maps for me since I have firewall), and I waited for that themos's time limit to weare off. but evertime his time would expire, he would rejoin almost as fast as he left, and before the server would refresh fast enough.

so it's either kick them out when a registered player enters the game, or a server that refreshes automatically all the time.

If it's a server running a team game or any non-lush map, then there are no demos. However, I think the 1hr limited use (but otherwise fully functional) real-arcade demo does not have those restrictions, so they could join any non-passworded server.

Like Stealth's idea, and think Joe M and Bravetree should designate which server is which. What does "Novice Server" mean? As compared with a regular server? And which are the servers not being run by Bravetree or Shockwave? Or wherever they originate from?

Also... I wish Z would do the auto name change thing like he did once in CTF. A player came on whose name was Dandelion and immediately starting screaming "this Communist program had changed his name from Super Dick to Dandelion." Almost fell off chair laughing.

Seriously, though, trash talking is pretty bad sometimes. Surprised Bravetree doesn't have an autokick or a timeout when the chatline is cut off or something. If I knew that 400 people would buy the game and were hesitant because of the perv and trashtalking, I would change something and take the money.

Well, as incentive to buy, in my newest racing mods, moving is disabled in mediums and heavies, so MOST demos cannot move, but still watch the action. I have had a couple of demos say "I'm gonna go get this game NOW so I can play!"
Sure enough, 10 minutes later the same person shows up in a light tank!

I told them to check out the frantic and spooky maps, but they didn't want to lol.

Great idea - to kick guys with small experience.
But this will give nothing.
1. I had occasionally deleted my name etc twice so i had to start
from beginning. I dont wanna be banned just because of one
wrong mouse click!
2. I can set my combat exp as I want to. Once i set it 25225.
Good, right? Its easy - so anybody else can find a way to do this.

I agree, there are a lot of demos talking trash. When
i come to server with demos i always hear
usual 'f*** you' and even better. But this is
usual stage of evolution. Those who buy game become
regular players, sometimes good players.
And they quit talking about that four-letter thing.
It s ok.
