Terrain Manager for current HEAD?

by Daniel Trigg · in Torque Game Engine · 12/10/2003 (11:05 am) · 37 replies

I have been searching these forums for days trying to find a link to a build of Terrain Manager that will patch agains the current HEAD...

I was told I could grab the latest GORP build and rip it out but that will take time and in all honesty since I am still getting used to things with the engine and VC.NET, I'll probably screw it up :)

Can anyone help me out?

I will give my first born child to Ben (or a case of beer) for intergrating some functional TM code into TSE. I would gladly pay extra even for TSE if it had it, or even just a bigger world map.

My first born ... hmm, wonder if Ben can accept my second one (or both, those days when they cause to much hassle) ??

No children, please. I have a hard enough time keeping track of myself. :P

If you really feel like giving me stuff, I have a link to my amazon wishlist on my profile. ;)

So how's it going? Is the TM work progressing? I was wondering if there was a feature list available for what you plan...

It is progressing, slowly though, as I always have other bugs to fix, like the pink screen one. I'll post a .plan when I get somewhere.

Quote: From reading the forums, TM along with tile paging seems to be the most desired missing piece to torque.

Yes, I'll second that. Does this work at all anymore? Since theres so many people who want this to work, why arent we working on it together? The code needs to be cleaned up, point out where and lets get cracking on it.

Paging terrain will be a fundamental characteristic of TSE milestone 2's terrain engine. As far as I am aware, there are no official plans to provide terrain tiling/paging as part of stock TGE 1.x.

But others have gotten it to work, so it is possible. I hear alot of naysaying,
I dont see one line of code though. Does anyone have it? Even if its broken, heck ill take a swing at it.

I'm tired of sitting around waiting for someone else to do it. I wanna do something.

What ever happened to the tribes 1 functionality of seed generated terrain that didn't tile (Was that my imagination)? Seems like it would be a trivial (compared to the TM) adjustment to the terrain generation code.

Just my one and a half cents.

Terrain paging is one of the key features of TSE. If you want huge terrains officially supported and coded by GG, you should use TSE.

When Milestone 2 is complete ;-)

Tribes 1 had multiple blocks which were not tiled, as I recall.

It could work for TGE, but nobody wants to write the code for it.

Plus, its what will push many to buy TSE.

Anyone still got a copy TerrainManager/GORPE I could download?

It's dead dead dead - you're better off writing your own or using TSE.

Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but I too find myself in the need for a "large" terrain. Simple scaling doesn't help enough, and trying to merge the last available TerrainManager code into TGE 1.4 has proven to be an enormous task - and of course it does not work anymore because pretty much everything else changed in the meantime AND it flat-out collides with resources like the Torque Lighting Kit.

Also, the TSE is nice and all, but it's really not an option for my project right now. I need working vehicles, sound and OpenGL support. TGE has all this, while TSE is well deserving the "early adopter" title. To make matters worse, there is by far not enough movement in the TSE codebase to justify jumping on early right now.

I am aware of the huge terrain creator in the works here (http://www.garagegames.com/mg/snapshot/view.php?qid=1193) but I wonder if anyone else has tackled this issue with the current 1.4 HEAD.
I can't believe that I am the only one affected by the limited TGE terrain size...

I'll re-ressurect it, because I need one too. I was hoping to find the old TerrainManager code just so I have something to go on. If anyone has any old version of it, that would be great.
