Game becomes unresponsive after enemy hit

by Marc Boxerman · in ThinkTanks · 12/03/2003 (11:14 pm) · 10 replies

I just purchased TT and think it's a great little game. It's very well done.

I do, however, have one issue. After I shoot an enemy tank, for several seconds I cannot control my own tank. I cannot filre or move. The game continues to play -- enemies continue to move (and fire), background music plays, etc. But my tank becomes completely nonresponsive. Is this part of the "physics" of the game, or is this a hardware performance problem? I should have plenty of overhead to play the game. I'm running Panther on an 800 mhz iMac with 512 mb RAM and a Geforce 2 MX graphics card.

Thanks for any help.

This is not normal behavior. Does this happen in online games and in solo mode/quick play or only in online games?

Actually, I've never gone online yet. This happens in Target Practice and the game that plays by clicking QuickPlay.

It seems to be more of a problem the closer the enemy tank is to me. The farther away I am, the less I notice this, if at all.

Now I figure that my tank may get "stunned" and somewhat immobilized if I get hit, correct? But this often happens when I'm hitting the enemy but not taking any hits myself, hence my problems in Target Practice mode. A couple of times I kept hitting 'x' to back away from an enemy and nothing happened. Then, seconds after I had released the key, my tank started moving backwards quickly, as if my keystrokes had been buffered and now were being processed. I had to ride it out.

Ooops. I mean 's' to back away. I just played the game a few minutes to confirm this behavior in Target Practice. Things are fine if I'm moving and shoot as I move; I continue to move as my shots fire and hit the enemy. But if I'm not moving and fire my weapon, I cannot move away until a few seconds after my shots hit the enemy tank. Very odd.

Very strange. We have not encountered this before, and we will look into it. What input devices are you using? Are they stock?

Standard Apple keyboard to move the tank and a wireless mouse (part of my Wacom Intuos tablet) to move the turret and fire. Maybe that's the problem. I'll try playing with the Apple Pro Mouse instead and see if that helps. Do you recommend I also try the Macally iShock game pad?

Could be the wacom mouse.. try it with a standard mouse and see if that makes a difference. If it does, let me know and I will hook up my Wacom to a mac and see if there are any problems.

I think it is the Wacom mouse. I played the game very briefly (just 5 mins) with the Apple Pro Mouse and had much better results. The game generally felt a bit more responsive and the turret was a bit easier to control (but I'm still not used to it :)). Most importantly, my tank did not freeze after firing a volley that hit an enemy. I was able to fire from a standstill and move away while the enemy was taking a hit. Much much better.

Thanks.

Interesting.. we will take a look at this next round of tests (before the next update) and see if we can replicate the problem.

Glad it is working now for you..

1) We had an unusual problem tonight on both homelan team scrum servers.

It began after a game ended. Instead of dropping us back into the game we hung for several _minutes_ at the Final Score screen, with that annoying "dum-dum-dum dum dum-dum" song playing. The game window showed players in the game including showing me in the game but it kept repeating the load cycle.

I exited the server and reconnected. The server began a normal load then it dropped back into the final score screen. Not the same final score as before.

The same problem occurred after exiting and relaunching the game.

We were able to connect with the other homelan team scrum server but at game's end the same problem occured.

I am running a Mac under Panther with adequate ram on cable modem. I believe most, if not all, of the other players were running Macs. I do not know if alll were running Panther.

I don't know if it is a server problem or an application problem.

Sounds like the server is restarting itself repeatedly.....
