A Shallow Question...

This idea has been posted and tossed around before, but I was curious as to what members of the community would be into a scrum server that limited the number of players to five or six. As it stands, we currently have six scrum servers - four of which remain empty almost all the time.

Although I usually get my team scrum fix at night, I do occasionally like to hone my skills in single scrum during the day. However, once the number exceeds six - and it happens quickly because everyone wants to be where the action is - I find the dynamics change completely. It becomes far too easy for our resident "defensive" players to prey on the small margin of error facing the bullet-ridden scrum carrier.

I know that making the goal larger (LC50?'s suggestion) or a death fog might address this; but, I'm not suggesting to mod the game and make it less desirable for those who like "defensive" play or the constant mayhem that results from it. I'm just merely proposing an option that would satisfy all.

Surely, one scrum server with a five or six player limit couldn't be that hard to set up. Or is it? Bravetree? Joe?

I like this idea Bo. I agree that a single scrum game with more than 5 or 6 'good' players creates some unique challenges and, all too often, a winner is decided based on whoever gets 1 or 2 'lucky goals'. Capping at 5 or 6 players would more often, in my opinion, allow the final score to provide a better measure of who was the 'best' instead of the 'luckiest'.

Actually the whole distribution of the servers should be rethinked. At all time, I suggest we should have these games on:

Scrum Lush x2
Scrum Lush (6 players)
Scrum Frantic
Scrum Spooky

Team Scrum Lush x2
Team Scrum Frantic
Team Scrum Spooky

BM Lush x2
BM Frantic
BM Spooky

Team BM Lush x2
Team BM Frantic
Team BM Spooky

CTF (all 12 maps) x2

For a total of 19 servers.

Under the current distribution. most servers sit empty while a few are overloaded.

Six on Scum would be fine. About right. I think most of the better players comment when it gets to 6 or 8. "Let's go to the team server". I am a defensive player, but I'd much rather play teams. I think Scum actually favors the offensive player. Someone interested more in getting the high score. I'm more interested in shutting down the offensive player. Would like nothing better than a game score:

1 Winna
0
0
0
0
0

or a shutout. You would here me high fiving and wwooting.

Think some games draw a crowd because of who is playing. Guess a comparison... If you play pickup basketball. Everyone wants to be on the A court. The other games are filler. Things you do waiting to play the good game. Think we have maybe 10 - 15 players who are players to knock off and feel and acomplishment, success in winning. I think when these tanks get together, wish you could expand to 15 or 20 players per game. Would hope though, that it is a team scum. 10-15 best players would just kill everything that moves. The winner would be a random chance success.

I agree, There should be a server dedicated to 6 people. so long as most of them are 10 player servers, that would be fine.

Yes limiting the numbers in scrum servers is long overdue.
I rarely play the full 10 player individual scrums anymore.
Don't find them very fun.
This seems an easy change that could accommodate all players wishes.

There is a reason why there is still only the one CTF server, and that's simply to do with the in-game stats recording etc. I still need to change some code to allow the stats to come from different servers etc, not just the one. Once that is sorted, I will be lowering the max players, and launching a second CTF server. Possibly even a third so that each server can be set to randomly choose between all 12 maps - though each will assign more weight to a different terrain set. (eg. one will use the spooky maps with a greater frequency than the lush or frantic, and another would have the lush maps more often than the spooky/frantic ones etc)

This has been high on my priorities list for a while (as was creating CTF maps for spooky & frantic - as well as redesigning Freudian)

Also high up on my priorities list is getting the web interface and database set up so that the stats can be viewed and automatically sorted etc.

Needless to say, my list is long, and the more questions and troubleshooting I have to do while Im in-game playtesting or observing (or even just enjoying myself in a game or two) the longer it takes to work down my list. However, as I hope is evident, progress is being made and my list is occasionally getting shorter (but then new things get added every so often too)

I'm all for a scrum server that limits the amount of players, team or otherwise. It will add variety.

Is it possible to have a waiting list that pops you into the game when there is an opening? At the present, it is kind of like bidding on eBay. You just hope to refreash at the perfect moment to get a bid in. On the positive side, it's nice to see that the game is so popular.

I've been spewing on about this since the update. 6 would probably be ideal for single scrum, and i wouldn't mind a 4 on 4 in team scrum, just to see how it flows in comparison.

if someone makes the goal larger, i cut off your hands. :)

I with this too

also a note that demo "Rats" (or even anoying full vertions) come and wreck the servers with either SPAMMING the chat or Sniping people that don't have the ball.. i think a PASSWORDED server for GG members only would be kinda cool.
