Piracy

by Michael Cozzolino · in General Discussion · 02/09/2001 (6:24 am) · 50 replies

I read recently that a beta tester for Tribes 2 ripped the sound from the beta and has distibuted them via the web. I also read that Napster is going to be getting into game file sharing. My question is: What if anything is the industry doing to stop this?

There is a great article on Gamasutra (registration required) from over a year ago about what the developers did to counter piracy of the game Spyro during its primary sales period (ie. the first six months). It is well worth reading if you are at all interested and/or concerned over this subject.

Doesn't Torque already support checksumming of models?

Would it be much more to extend it to the executable?

I think BF1942 does this because it is almost impossible to play a cracked version of the game with an uncracked version, or atleast it was at release

Anyway.. I don't think lowering prices will make it less hacked. Jamella, a famous Diablo 2 hacker - said that she didn't want to hack the game because she had to, it was to prove for herself and the community that she could do it, just for the fun of it.

Stefan - dude, old threads. :) Read the last post date before you post. If it's over a year old you're probably not gonna add much to the conversation.

Yeah... piracy sucks, its been around forever... Tools and development cost too much for it to be an acceptable act. Fact is though, no matter how hard we try, we can't get piracy to stop, only to prevent it.

Yes it did, nobody pirates anything anymore. Nothing to see here... move along.

These are not the driods you're looking for.
