Sound Packs

by Ken Rogers · in General Discussion · 11/06/2003 (3:50 pm) · 17 replies

MojoAudio will soon be publishing Sound Packs on this site. Similar to the Art Packs, Sound Packs will be published in themes (shell sounds, SciFi weapons, etc.). As opposed to sound from a standard library these sounds will be ready to simply drop in with no further editing needed.

So what do your projects need? Give us your input; we'll be looking here to see what themes people are the most interested in.

Good stuff, sound can add so much to a game (Half Life being one of the best examples)

Some things I could see a use for:

- Realistic footsteps - possibly on a few different surfaces like concrete, dirt and snow and not unrealisticly loud
- Humming flourescent lights and other ubiquitous industrial sounds
- Birds, insects, gentle breezes barking dogs and other outdoor sounds
- Street sounds

From a prototyping standpoint.. a bunch of weapon firing, explosion, 'hit' sounds, and powerup sounds of all different lengths and pitches.

This would be great to get to approximate the pitch, length and volume of the FX sounds. Even if we went to get custom sounds, it would be great to be able to get close with a sounds from this pack in order to speed up the process.

also, ambient engine sounds (again of different lenghts and pitches) as well as ones for jets, spaceships, etc...

I agree with Joe.
Definately need weapon and explosions sounds, that is a must :D

Also various jet sounds, both air and water. Footstep sounds maybe, for those who want to use the terrain.

Death sounds, the infamous grunt noise the quake games avatars makes comes to mind here.

Various "event" sounds for when certain game 'goals' are met, like some could be cheering crowds (for sportish games), simple "taadaaa" sounds, or what have you.

Also environment sound effects would be nice. Like wind howling, rain, water splashing, and so forth.

Sounds of crowds - ambient citylife, people cheering or "golf clapping".

Lots of explosions, gunfire, and sounds approximating high-tech weapon fire.

Loopable engine sounds, both modern and sci-fi high-tech.

Medieval weapon sounds - clanking of metal weapons, swings through the air, crossbows... :)

Lots of different kinds of grunts, footfalls, and screams of pain.

Some generic chimes, dings, clicks, alarms, and so forth - things you could use for UI sound effects and for a puzzle game.

How soon could we be expecting the first of these packs? I could use them RIGHT NOW (or within the next 2 months) for my current project, but I'm looking ahead towards future projects. I'd love an inexpensive solution.

Thanks for the input so far. A shell and/or powerup pack will likely be the first and should be available in the next several days, to be followed by a weapon pack. We'll wait to see if a more defined consensus develops before deciding on the next packs.

The Sound Packs are UP!!

We started with Sci-Fi Weapons, Explosions and Interface sounds, check them out! We're very pleased with the variety and selections and have plans for more packs on the drawing board.

Any chance the sounds can also be provided in .WAV format?

The guys at GG were concerned about download sizes. I'll let them know there inserest in waves and see if we can make multiple formats available. btw, was there a particular pack you were interested in for this format?

$75 for these 3 packs seems a tad high... I can also see how it wouldn't make financial sense to sell for less.

Edit: I didn't realize this was a product for sale on these pages and not a general "Sound Packs" thread. Otherwise, I wouldn't have posted a competitors link here. I understand how hard it is to scratch out an existance from rocks.

It is ok to compare competitive products. They are only a Google search and a click away.

We will be posting a news release and RSS feed announcing these products tomorrow.

Like Bravetree's model packs, I'm more concerned about overall value than price. $25 is no big investment, but like all indies on a tight budget, you need to make sure you can get as much quantity and quality as possible for your buck. A "Buy Two, Get One Free" special would be WONDERFUL (hint, hint).

However, right *NOW* I'm desperate for good, non-cheesy sci-fi weapon sounds. In .WAV format. Based on the demo, it sounds like there's at least a couple useable ones in the Futuristic Weapons sound pack.

I'd rather work with the .WAV originals than convert them from OGG to WAV though --- Ken, any chance we could work something out here?

Gonna throw in a plug, here.

Just picked up the Sci-Fi Weapons pack. I had a couple of special concerns, and Ken was quick to help me out personally with it. Gotta give Mojo Audio an A for customer service :)

Anyway - the sound effects are nice, quality work, with some good variety. There are some pretty cheesy sounds in there that might work really well in an arcade-style or cartoonish game - plus some good, serious sounds that would work nicely in an FPS or epic space game. The biggest risk might be a lot of games sounding alike.

My $25 was well-spent.

Thanks for the feedback Jay, strange thing games usually do sound a like. How many different sounds of reloading / shells / gun movement are there! :)

I bought some cheap sound collections a while back, not perfect. But great for prototyping even if they're not final. Guess i'll have to check these out.

I found about 8 sounds from one pack I could immediately as final sounds - replacing some really awful public domain stuff I'd tossed in there for stand-in. More than half my sound effects are weapon - oriented, though, so this was perfect for me.

Even on my limited budget, I think that's a pretty good price for prof. quality sound effects. I think I'll be getting at least a couple of those packs soon.
