Modeling programs for the TGE?

by John O · in Artist Corner · 11/03/2003 (7:46 am) · 8 replies

Hi everyone. Im new to modeling (been doing programming). So, I just wanted to know which programs are made for Torque? Ive been running on demos lately. But I dont have a clue as to which one can export to and from the TGE:( Im also experimenting with Maya 5 PLE. Seeing how im not the richest guy in the world, the PLE is great. I know that there are limitations to it. Just wasn't sure if I could make models using it for Torque. Also, ive had my eye on Gamespace from Caligari. Is this program better or worse compared to there other product (trueSpace)? Oh, and keep in mind im on a budget (no 3Ds Max for me!! Lol....). Ok, enough with the questions...........

GameSpace *is* trueSpace, pretty much. There's not much difference between the two, except a few missing functions relating to NURBS, and the presence of the MS3D exporter(which is available for trueSpace via a conversion pack).

gameSpace is worth the money, unless you already own trueSpace. Against other apps, it's cheaper, but it does lack a few workflow tools to make it really compete. However, with the purchase of plugins, you can get it to about 90% of the other apps, still at less than what they cost.

Right now, you have to export to MS3D format, and then export again to DTS to get to Torque, as there's no finished exporter from tS->DTS directly, but hopefully that will change soon. I've got a .map exporter working, except for a few bugs, so that'll be covered very soon.

One thing, you should download the demo first and try it out, because it does work a lot differently from Max and Maya. Probably the most different out of all of them, but that appeals to some people(like me). Hope that helps.

I like Milkshape, though it could be better. They are working on a new version, but there is no estimate for when it will arrive. The Torque exporter works, but barely, and many features (not necessarily essential) do not work. Levels of detail, alpha sorting, and animation-only exporting are not implemented, for instance. Milkshape is definitely the bare-bones modelling program, but it's only about $25.

@Ted-I think I just might as well invest in gameSpace;) Ive been looking over a LOT of reviews on it, and all have been good. It seems like a pretty decent program for only $300. As regards to what you said about trueSpace "Right now, you have to export to MS3D format, and then export again to DTS to get to Torque, as there's no finished exporter from tS->DTS directly"
Is this the same for gameSpace? Im only asking because I thought gS is catered specificly for games and game engines. Im sorry about all the questions. I only ask because my knowledge on modeling is very slim (at least for now).

@John-Milkshape is a good modeling tool. But, with the lack of some features...i'd rather invest into something a little more powerful. And as you said "Milkshape is defintely the bare-bones modeling program", I agree 100%. So, Im going to put a little money into something that can handle what I need it to do;)

Thank you both for the help. Im looking forward to hearing any more information on my subject at hand. Thanks for you time.

@John: gameSpace and trueSpace are the same thing as it was already said, the DTS exporter isn't available for trueSpace.

@Xavier-Thanks for the link;) I hope it gets released sometime soon. Ive already decided that gameSpace is the way to go. Also, about the DTS exporter....gS and tS cannot export directly to the TGE but, can be imported to MilkShape 3D and from there exported to Torque? Im just making sure I got the details down:) Once again, thanks for the help!!!

Yes that's true, since gameSpace supports exporting to milshape and milshape supports exporting to Torque.
The only true complete DTS exporter is the one for 3dstudio Max though.

Rats, oh well. At least now I know gameSpace can get what I need into the TGE, even if I have to import/export to and from MilkShape 3D. I dont mind the extra work...
Well, thanks for EVERYTHING:D And have a nice day!!
