Idle Tanks On Team Servers

by jangles · in ThinkTanks · 11/01/2003 (12:55 pm) · 21 replies

This is a call to all TT players to please log off the team servers once you have finished playing. Recently, the situation has reached epidemic proportions. Last night was particularly bad. Early in the evening, I went on a team server with three inactive tanks. Later on, I played on a team with two others that weren't even visible. And the icing on the cake was one individual who had an idle tank on a team server for about six hours - only to return and spam the screen with a three line Hi! as if it were cute. I don't usually use profanity online, but this dude got it from me. Another player was guilty of this infraction today.

I don't think anybody has a problem with a player briefly leaving his/her tank unattended. A "brb" to answer the phone, grab a drink, use the can, etc. is quite acceptable and part of everyday life. But not making a conscientious effort to log off team servers when one is obviously not coming back disrupts the gaming experience for those of us who wish to join or continue a match.

I third this... I had to get up earlier this morning to answer the door and help bring in a an exercise bike-thing a friend brought to me, but I was gone a couple minutes tops... As soon as I knew i was going to be longer, I ran upstairs and logged out of the game I was in.

Yes, totally agree. Nothing worse than being on a team where a bunch of your teammates are sleeping, and you're getting killed. If you're not going to play for a while, log off. There are (probably) others waiting to get in the game who will play. Simple as that.

LC50 joined the game.
Ben(SA) joined the game.
Maxwell joined the game. We are all on a team vs bots.

Fighting and chaos against some bots for a while, no participation from Maxwell, who has disappeared.

LC50: max are you there
Ben(SA): he isnt
LC50: max come on

Fighting continues.

Timer comes on. Maxwell rewspawns.

Maxwell: haha suckers

Ben(SA): bastard

Final score comes up.

End of story.

Yeah, over the past week or 2, the unattended tank problem has really gotten out of hand. Last night Tomato's tank sat vacant during 5 games or so. As it was a packed house, I'm sure others were trying to get into the game and couldn't. Plus, it made for some very lopsided 5 on 4 matches.

If you're gonna be gone for more than a few minutes (5?), do the right thing and leave the game. It's that simple!

I also really agree on all this.

i have experienced one where 7 tanks where not active and they all came back spamming the chat saying "I WON I WON I WON I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

i dont think so!

This is also the case on the CTF server, about two weeks ago I was on it, and there were only 3 people playing on the green team, and the 2 of us were losing bad. But all 6 of the blues were active, and fighting us like hounds.

Get this one:

SETTING: Scrum

Racer445 Scored a goal!

Other person: Were playing tag F******

Racer: why? this is a perfectly good scrum game.

Other person: i hate scrum!

Racer: ugg. im not starting this.

Playing person: look . you have the ball, the goal is open. take a shot.

*Other people shoot racer*

Racer: hey! stop it!

Other people: ba*****

counter go's 3.. 2.. 1.. 0!

Racer: i won!
...END...

it show shows "Tag" is a waste of time.

Unfortunately the players responding or even reading this thread are probably not going to be the culprits. There is nothing we can do to stop the ones doing it on purpose. We can just hope that the ones who may accidentally walk away from the computer while still logged on will read this and check first to make sure they are not still logged on. It would seem pretty obvious that ghosting a team game is totally inconsiderate, but I guess not, eh?

The first thing I do with ghosted players is kill them just to get rid of them but they return in the next game. Brave3 (BraveTree)- Is there is a way for the game to drop the connection user-side if the player is inactive for a period of time? Perhaps if the game ends and the player has been in the press space to re-spawn for most of the game they disconnect themselves from the server or something.

My 2 cents

A NEW RECORD HAS BEEN BROKEN!!

Apparently a tank has been abandoned for DAYS now on a Team Battlemode server!

Can anyone say "AUTOKICK?"

Wtf!!!??? The tank is "mess" and has been on the team battlemode server for a few days now. I don't think it is the same "MESS" we all know and love from scrum games.

This has to be a glich in the damn program... anyone who would intentionally or accidently do this is screwed in the head.

The only logical scenario that I can think of to explain this is that during a heated battlemode game, the poor dude had a heart attack and died right there in front of the computer. As I type this, his lonely, bloating, festering corpse is hunched over the keyboard in his one-bedroom apartment. In a day or 2, we can only hope that the funk of death will float down the corridor to next-door neighbors. I pray that the cops who break down the door have the decency to shut the computer off after removing the body...

Yeah Lc i do agree!

I have seen a solitary person simply taking the scrum and jumping off the cliff with it then he takes it again..Ect.

Really annoyed from these people, it makes me mad for them to wreck a perfectly good game.

I had just got a dumb little Password on my PC, i cant figure it out. so i wont be on that much... for now ;)

CTF will auto kick anyone who doesnt respawn for 5 minutes. It can be a bit tedious to play and wait those 5 minutes out when 3 out of the 5 players on one team are sitting idle, however it needs to be a decent amount of time to allow for those instances when one does have to suddenly and temporarily disappear from the game.

The auto-kick timer is based on the 'press space to respawn' message. So in theory, a player could have a lot longer than 5 minutes. i.e. if it took the rest of the players in the game several minutes to kill the idle tank.

If someone is sitting idle, then shoot them. Even kill your own team mate if the enemy don't rid you of him/her. It will either provoke them to play instead of sitting there or will quickly put that person under the 5 minute timer.

-Z-: I hope Bravetree works in your code for the auto-kick in a future patch. You've done some amazing things with TT, and I hope they pick up on some/all of it.

I was playing battlemode last night with both mess and OMG. They were both very much alive and into the game (and doing well I might add).

Maybe he's afraid that if he logs out, he won't be able to get back in. So he keeps it on all the time and just plays when he's near by. Instead of talking about him, we should try to talk to him. I believe he comes alive late at night. I was on between 10:30 and 11:PM (PST) last night.

I don't play as often as I used to, but if he's still there Wednesday night, I'll try to get thru to him.

Yes that mess thing is / was something you have to see to believe it. It can lead to tank rage to have an idiot sitting for 3 days in a game.

One dude in Korea died this summer, playing non-stop for 50+ hours a multiplayer video game in an internet cafe, until he finally collapsed. Talk about addictive...

We can only hope for TT v1.2 to come out, including tons of BT & -Z- script improvements. I suspect BT transfered TT's upgrade and development to -Z-... But yeah, someone mentioned NDA so we'll know when they'll be ready...
