How much C++ Knowledge Needed?

by Nathan · in Torque Game Engine · 10/26/2003 (12:22 pm) · 4 replies

I am thinking of getting into development, but have not had very much training in C++, or any other coding language for that matter (some friends that know some, some books, ect) I actually have very little training.

Is torque still worth it? And will torque make a good "learning tool" for future "excursions"?

What I'm really trying to ask, is, how much knowledge of coding do you need to unlock torque's full potential?
Would I be a fool to buy it?

Full potential == full coding knowledge.. well or at least advanced. If you are going to make a simple game without modifying much of the engine itself then It could be pretty much worth it and could be a good learning experience... but if you are going to be doing graphic mods you will need to learn OpenGL first, for example. Also a good knowledge of 3d math would be good. etc.

Ok. Thank you.
I'm pretty good at 3D modelling, ect. (you know)
It's just I don't have much prior knowledge of C++.
Thanks for replying.

It is very very rare that you will find a one person development team. I.E. someoen who can do 3d modeling, textuing, programming, level design, music, foley, etc etc. Anyone who can is not as strong in one area as they should be.

So in a nutshell,l don't try to do it all yourself. If you are a good modeler, then do modeling and team up with other people to make games.

Thats what a team is all about :)

Haha. 3D modelling for me :)
Well, and texturing.... hey! I can do art :)
Anyway, C++ I guess would be a good thing to know. I guess the best way to start is to help out on an already started project.
