Modellers

Quark or Worldcraft (Hammer) for interiors, 3DS or MilkShape for models, and the built in editor for maps.
Ok, so what about on the Mac or Linux?
I don't see any replacement for interior design, models can be created with Lightwave on a Mac and a 3rd party exporter, and the built in editor is used for maps.
So what programs are used for interiors on OS X and Linux? Are there any modelers for Linux? Is Lightwave the only option besides VPC and Milkshape on the Mac?

I have Photoshop. Do I need a utility to convert from an image to some texture format? Maya is definitely available for the Mac, but it's expensive too. More than Lightwave. Lightwave I found I can get an academic edition (I'm a student) for $400 which isn't sooooo bad, but definitely out of my range at the moment.

If your going to get a learning edition, Maya has PLE which is free. I haven't started using yet (although version 5 just came out which I just finished downloading). You can't create commercial products with it (or really render anything since it sets a watermark on rendered images) but if you were considering getting an academic edition I guess that would matter to much as education editions have the same restriction (no commercial products). If your interested (150Meg download) you can grab it here
