Terrain Texture Blending

Is it possible to stretch the blending of terrain textures further apart?
Basically the same question as here: http://www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/111833
which was asked in 2010 and answered that there might be a solution soon.
Currently the blending looks like this:

But I would like to have the fading accross several meters.

I think it probably only exists in the terrain editor, and not the painter. Pity. If you really want to blend out your textures, you could set the scale of the terrain to be >1:1 meters per pixel. Although I think that'd ruin the look somewhat.
