Rude/Obscene Player Names

by Dan McNeil · in ThinkTanks · 10/05/2003 (4:34 pm) · 33 replies

This afternoon there were 2 different players (maybe same player ??) using rude or obscene names. Since this game is played by all ages Sluthog and I took offence and made a point of taking the player out, even when on our own team. This was done after chatting and requesting they change their name. Hopefully others can use this stategy to remove this kind of useless players. Just my two cents. Sluthog do you agree ???

Is that what he meant? If it is, sorry Fp.

Judging by some of his other posts, though, especially on the marco polo page, I thought that gf meant girlfriend...

As mr clone demonstrated, some people think it is outrageously funny that they have a rude or obscene name. go back to the devil you doofus.

This is so outrageously funny.... yea...
Dustin, you need to chill a bit. The only one worked up here is you. If you put as much effort in trying to be the person that you're suggesting you are, rather than villifying people's immature use of language, you might come across as a person to look up to. As it stands you come across as a stiff with no sense of humor. I've never met anyone who found the word "ass" to be something to get so hung up on. Maybe if you stopped trying to make people believe that this was so offensive, you might begin to see the humor, even if not appreciated.
All said, I agree that some people are ass holes, but I'm not gonna cut anyone down about it on a public forum.

ACA is cool with me.

It's the truly crass names and the hatenames / bigoted names that I have no place for.

I have no sense of humor and yet I probably have more friends than you ACA because I'm a COMEDIAN!
Oh, and I think we all know who's the immature one here *cough*ACA*cough*.
Michael and Baba, keep out of this.

Listen dude, I'm not about to sit and count the number of friends that I have because your a professional comedian. The whole point of my comment was that my name IS completely immature and foolish. Maybe humor that you don't like or can't grasp but I'm not gonna worry about it. I never thought that a video game playing forum was meant to be the place where people sit around and SERIOUSLY judge the aesthetics of humor..... but look where we are (I'm laughing).
I'm comfortable with the idea that you look for displays of decent moral character when you play games on-line and that I and a (majority of the gaming community), love to play for competition and some good shit-talk.
I will say D!, that I recognize your concern and to a certain degree sympathize with your issue, but I still think you're working really hard to get offended over this issue.

FWIW, ACA's name though moderately offensive is not really what is at issue here.

There are several players who have certainly overstepped the bounds of reasonable speech. Though the border of what speech is socially acceptable has moved considerably since I was a sprout there are still bounds, nearer for some farther for others, beyond which, I suspect we canl generally agree, violate common acceptance.

An occasional obscenity, blasphemy or vulgarism bothers me not at all. I object only to two things. Player names which grossly overstep the limits of social convention. (George Carlin's _Seven Words You Can't Say on TV_ & the body of racial epithets are a fair measure of what I, personally, consider inappropriate) Secondly, obscene spamming or continual obscene speech during a game, beyond being tedius and boring, is simply not amusing.

How about as a measure we just don't say anything we wouldn't say to 6 foot tall, 225 pound, armed man having lunch with his mother.
