Rude/Obscene Player Names
by Dan McNeil · in ThinkTanks · 10/05/2003 (4:34 pm) · 33 replies
This afternoon there were 2 different players (maybe same player ??) using rude or obscene names. Since this game is played by all ages Sluthog and I took offence and made a point of taking the player out, even when on our own team. This was done after chatting and requesting they change their name. Hopefully others can use this stategy to remove this kind of useless players. Just my two cents. Sluthog do you agree ???

It still is very bothersome to most players both old and young when someone is screaming out for attention so loudly.
Whether "taking them out" or shunning them completely (after stating our displeasure with their actions) works better I don't know.
While not in favor of censorship per say, I do feel we have to establish some moral standards for the Think Tanks community,

My son (Dar, age 9) was there too (I was watching, trying to learn me some skills lol) This was a very obnoxious person in name and actions. He was also a lousy player (not surprisingly). I prefer not putting on the "child safe filter" as my kids like to communicate with their teammates and be in the flow of the game. Shunning does'nt work well when the obscene name remains on the screen for any length of time. Thats why we chose the wipe him (I'm assuming it was a him) out method. As a side note I enjoyed playing with both you and Dar today. I am slowly gaining skill and hope to be regarded as an acceptable teammate.DanMac

Is Dar the dar in psychoscrum? He's good!

"Psst! Dar! Right- or ctrl- click on the TT application icon. Select "Show package contents." Open "Contents". Open "Resources". Open "Game". Open "Client". Open "Prefs.cs" in Notepad or TextEdit. Scroll down to:
Now comes the key part: SET IT TO YOUR OWN PASSWORD! That way Daddy will have to do all this to change it back!
Hehehe. This way you will have access to all of TT! THEY CANNOT BLOCK US OUT! KIDS SHALL RULE THIS WORLD!"
P.S. I think that Bravetree should put a control feature in the game that responds to special activation. Bravetree can hold special "Annoying Player Bashing" Councils. The players selected during the APBC will have messages sent to their copies of TT that warn them from ever using offensive language, etc. again in TT. Their copy of TT will be monitored and any more trouble and you impose a long-term inversed parental filter. They are known in games as: APBC convict#15 or 182 or whatever. No chat options, or maybe they can select from a certain list of things what to say? I.e. 1=Hello everyone! Have a nice day! 2=Great Game! 3=Nice goal! etc. Yeah, I know it sounds stupid. But fun lol

Note: Even if you have the parental filter, if your kids have been monitoring the forums, baba, they might have figured out that the Parental Filter password is openly stored in prefs.cs.Is Dar the dar in psychoscrum? He's good!

Like Dan, after the player ignored several polite requests to change his name or leave, I did my best to make the game unplayable for him. I didn't particularly enjoy that activity. I have not enjoyed it when others have endeavored to make the game unplayable for me for whatever reason.
Several players sport offensiv names, I have commented to most of them in a offhand manner but in many cases their names are arcane enough that a child would be hard pressed to comprehend the obscenity. This particulare player was beyond the pale. Not only was his name offensive but behaved rudely toward other players.
I have no desire to become either Marshall of the Obscene. I am by nature a pedant and a pedagogue and am ill fitted to be a member of the Hanging Posse.
I believe that this particular issue is one that must be addressed by BraveTree. Createing and maintaining an index of player names does not seem to me, from a few decades of programming and database experience, to be a particularly difficult programming task. Such an index could both reduce the number of offensive names and control name duplication.
As for the community, I can see an advantage in us making it clear to the rude, the habitually offensive and the unsportsmanlike that they are not welcome in our games. Exactly where the demarcations of behavior are drawn is something that we will have to discover for ourselves. What I do know is that the person today was well beyond any line I would draw in the sand.
(Dar is NINE. I am humbled ... and more than a little envious. )
"Ole rockin' chair's got me ... Cane by my side...."
"Nine." Mumble, mumble, groan, wheeze. "Nine!!"

Yeah, I'm with you on that puppy. It leaves one with having had an unpleasant experience. Of course with battle league coming up the target practice helps.
I'm becoming more convnced that the only way to deal with offensive names, until or if BraveTree decides to move, is to make the game unplayable for them. For it to work every one in the game has to eliminate them at every opportunity. Destroy then then get back to the sdcrtum or battle.

You would be surprised how un-innocent children can be. Just because I am twelve (lol, back to the rocking chair eh?), it doesn't mean that I am completely green-behind-ears. Believe me, I can decipher even most of the blacker ones lol. Youth is short and fleeting, adulthood is forever. Even if I am not sure what it means, I can always tell when someone's name isn't exactly respectable. Fortunately there aren't many offensive-named players.

So a name like sluthog would actually become "pansey" or "tulip" in CTF. I wouldn't be suprised if these changes get merged in version 1.2

One of the features in zoggles CTF mod is to re-name offensive names to flowers. So a name like sluthog would actually become "pansey" or "tulip" in CTF. I wouldn't be suprised if these changes get merged in version 1.2

My screen name is not _slut_ anyting It is slugthog. Please note the letter "g" after the "u" and before the "t". Nothing obscene or even suggestive. Certainly you have simiply misread it. You needn't apologize for your misaprehension. I know you will be more conscientious in the future.
@Asterisk
Has nothing to do with innocence or lack thereof. It has to to do with decorum. On the whole I am probably the one most offended by vulgar names. And I will not allow my 9 & 12 year old niece to play the game, though I know they would enjoy it, because I would prefer that their introduciton to Engllish not be in the mire of obscenity. Even She Who Must Be Obeyed is put off by what she has encountered on my monitor when she has wandered in for an evening of nagging.
Would you feel comfortable, Asterisk, if your mom were watcvhing oveer your shoulder as you played, or your little sister?
My greatest objection to obscenity is its triviality. It takes a modicum of wit to phrase an insult without yielding to vulgarity and none to bray obscenities. If you want to learn how to give another his come-uppance try reading "Cyrano d"Bergerac" with particular reference to the nose speech in act One. It requires skill to verbally flay a cretin and none to empty slops on him.
An obscene name demonstrates the player's contempt for the entire community of players. You know as well as I that were it not for the anonymity of the internet these cretins would never consider such base and vulgar pseudonyms. Anonymity allows even cowards to believe that they have some power. Do you really believe that triviality of of a human would dare physically enter my home and address me as he did yesterday from the safety of the internet?
As for remembeing my childhood. I remember it well. I will vouch that I was at times as callow as any of you but even then I endeavored that when I took another to task it would be he who was covered in excrement not I.
Ignornace I can abide but not stupidity.

I concur with many of your points, which have been and are being discussed elsewhere, I think they may tend to dilute this thread. It might be more effective if we reserved this thread for offensive names and speech in hopes that collectively we might develop a method for limiting their employment in the game.
For what it's worth and, as always, in my opinion.

Maybe rather than protesting we should make TT a learning experience for the little tikes, i.e. from now on my TT name will be "obfuscate" or maybe "Antidisestablismentarianism." Will that fit? I can see them now, Daddy what's antisdis.... and the rest.

That was my mistake Sluggy. Like one of the other threads states you only see the first and last letter of a word somtimes. Does the name Slugthog com from mythology. I could'nt find any references with a web search??DanMac II

You are unlikely to find any references to Slugthog or the Assgard family lineage in commonly available histories or mythologies. He is a central, though obscure, figure in an heroic myth that originates in the region of Flanders and is somewhat contemporary with Charlemagne. He primary attribute was his loyalty coupled with a dogged will to survive. One day, perhaps, I will transcribe what I know of his history, ne. mythology.

One day you pointed it to me, 'Man, my name is Slugthog', which is quite funny within the TT universe - who wants to drive a slug around in a scrum?
'Say, I hope you don't mind if I wipe you 1 inch from the goal?'

Your point is taken. There are some things that I wouldn't especially want my mom or dad to see, and some things I definitely wouldn't be comfortable having my 11 year old sister see (I do have one, you must be pschic!). However, my family doesn't tend to peer too closely into my TT life. Besides, I am not one of the people I would be embarassed about, but there are some rather "vulgar" names and talk in TT that just aren't really what you want on your screen. I generally won't play in games with people who have offensive names. As for the forums.. well, those are the forums. Oh well. Most of the stuff on the forums I have already heard at school by now. Even some more sexual-oriented slang is not uncommon around the 7th grade picnic benches, although our vice principal works hard to catch it. All I was trying to say is that while undoubtably there are innocent kids left in the world, I wouldn't be too surprised if even my sister knew what, for instance, a _slut_ was.
