Name changers.

I would like to start this thread to show my oppinion on "name changers." Many people, mostly buyers, stick with one name in TT. They have established reputations. Others, mostly Demos, have an annoying habbit of using a different name every time. I would like to point out someone named Trunks. At least he WAS names Trunks. Every other day or so, some one pops on and says Hi Filbert! Hi, I say, (whoever you are.) It's me, Trunks. Then he says that about fifty times. Name changers, disrupt the harmony of the TT community. It makes it hard for recognition of players, forming alliances, etc. I believe there should be a limit to names under use. Maybe three per instillation! Then, if some wanted a bunch of names they would have to constantly re install the game. Let me know your input on this. I would like to know if I am alone with these thoughts, and if I am not, maybe Joe will hear it.

Do you do that to try and prove how smart you are? I will try to explain once and for all! Just because you can find peoples spelling and grammer mistakes does not make you smart, inteligent, or wise! maybe some people don't have time to edit their posts because they are busy getting through high school in TWO years! And getting ready to go to college at 16! You make everyone, (including yourself) think you are SOOO smart. The thing is, anyone can see that a word is spelled "you," not "youij." WOOPS! Now you can say I don't know how to spell "you." Sorry you get picked on so much, but this is another sign of immaturity. To always have to pick on everyones grammar mistakes. Maybe it is just a passing stage, or maybe you are trying to make your self feel grown up! Well, let me tell you, grown up people (or ones older than you,) don't spend their time picking on every little slipped finger on the key board that can be found! They take time improving their own knowledge base, and Living life to it's fullest. Let me tell you, once and for all, that correcting people slip up's like this does NOT make you seem smart. It makes you seem like an immature, very borred, twelve year old, trying to make the world think he is smart. Sorry.

Sometimes its nice to be able to pop into a game wearing an anonymous name... not that I do it, but it's nice to retain the option. Takes the performance pressure off, and you can pretend to be a noob. However, most people probably keep their usual name 95% of the time, I suspect... it's nice to go find the veterans for a good challenging game. Once you get a good rep, your name will always be a big draw. There is always an entourage that follows Tanky, Tally, FP, etc., they pack the servers like Sigfreid and Roy pack the shows in Vegas.
Rather than change my name, sometimes I just wear my disguise, and no one is the wiser:

Name changers are bad, but impostors are worse. A few months ago, someone kept impersonating ROGUE and I... i.e., entering games with the name "ROGUE" or "LC50". I think my LC50 impersonator was online more than I was, I just wish they were better than me... my reputation could use the boost, lol. Most impersonators are noobs or "the usual suspects" (I won't name names here). You can tell them by their playing style (or lack of). For example: if you see Az in a scrum game, if he doesn't have at least 10 points in the first minute of the game, you know that it's not really him.Sometimes its nice to be able to pop into a game wearing an anonymous name... not that I do it, but it's nice to retain the option. You made some good points. I impersonated a demo once just to see... never did it again. They are worse than name changers. Yesterday I saw a server called "Kill Filbert," guess my fan list is growing. lol. *, still waiting for u.

It's for this reason I don't name any names when posting about someone's actions here. Or, if I do name someone, I add the caveat that it could have been someone using the same or similar name (or, in the case of "thrill killing" a misunderstanding of or disagreement on tactics).
While it's annoying, I don't think effort should be made to change it. There is just so much the programmers can do to make a fun game; I don't think they need to account for every possible psychological profile that may play in the game, too. (It's enough that they have to include a feature to turn off chat in case of offensive language.) I've also found that the ThinkTanks game lends itself to self/community policing pretty well. Most offenders are simply ignored or one or two players take it upon themselves to harass the offender until they leave. If someone with a recognized name is acting out of character, we can simply assume they were having a bad day, someone they hate took control of their computer, or someone just took the name for whatever reason.
I have often wondered if the same name can be had by two or more players. And, if so, can they meet on the same server? Can they be making rounds of the servers at the same time but not join one at the same time? In other words, could I see two or three LC50s on various servers? Dunno...
Lastly, I don't want to have names restricted because I occasionally like to come in under other names. I haven't tried picking a name I know someone else uses, but I'd hate to see it harder to just switch to a different name if, say, my usual name is being particularly beat up one day for whatever reason.

On grammar checking:
Don't worry about the grammar checking, Filbert. While some may be doing to pick on you or harass you, others may actually just be trying to help, even if not being particularly subtle about it.
Being a writer and holder of a Lit degree myself, I cringe at the stuff I see on the Internet that passes for writing. However, I long ago quit haranguing people for sheer laziness and only jump in now and then for specific peeves or when I know there is actually a problem. (I particularly despise the misuse of "loose" and "lose." One message forum I've been on since 1996 has a couple of loose/lose people; it's an inside joke there now that I post one or two messages about loose/lose a year just to get it out of my system. :) ) I often cringe more at the grammar checkers (for a number of reasons), however, so I usually try to take things to email rather than hijack message threads. Why people on the Net insist on being lazy when the whole point is to communicate is beyond me. But there it is.

Auto Kick Demos? No way! Sorry, I think that is a bad idea. Demos, have a right to play with the "big guys" and get an oppinion of the game.

Still, It does not seem like a good idea. Most Demos eventually end up buying the game, the others (I'm thinking of you FunMonkey) normally are as good as anyone else. Just because they are poor little things does not mean they should lose EVEN MORE playing rights. I don't know about you, but I can remember being a demo! I felt so limited. I think that is an un neccisary thing. here is my resolution though. For demos, the 10 person limit would stand. For buyers, it would go to 15. That way, You could only fit so many demmos, but buyers could still join the game.

No need to auto-kick demos. They only get to play for 5 minutes at a pop as it is, so it's pretty easy to hop in as they get booted and have to come back.

Newbie
or
Jinx?????

Well I was playing last night, yesterday for most of you (I live in Germany), and I found it very confusing because someone was using my name.("or have I been using his??????") When you come on to the server, I noticed that it puts a "1" after your name automatically when this name is already in use. I haven't been playing that long so I don't have any right to put any claims on the name but I am trying to make a reputation for myself and that is hard, as good as you all are, when others are using the same name. I then left the game and came back with my second choice "Jinx". But maybe I should be happy about it because as far as I can tell the other "Newbie" played very well. I would rather make my reputation for myself though, bad or good, who knows, but at least I can say I did it myself. I guess there is nothing you can do except find a way to let the others know that that is not you. Who knows maybe they used my name to make the other team think they had an advantage. Then you have to ask youself "Do I really play that bad?"Newbie

I gotta say that was a funny post! excuse me and let me introduce myself, im Newbie, i have been here quite awhile and i was surprise to see someone with my name. That night (usually i play on friday nights) i saw newbie on the server and wonder who was this? I wanted to see the playing expertise you had, which was very good. I was glad to hear that your not just some kid that took my name with any disreguard to the person who might have had it first, as written in your post. i hope we meet again hopefully next time on the same side!

Hello and thank you that you took the time to let me know I won't use the name anymore. As you see I've changed it. I hope this one isn't taken. Sorry for the inconvienence and I hope I didn't hurt your reputation too much. I'll look for you next time, maybe I can get a few pointers on my game. Thanks again

I changed names like underwear the first few weeks I started playing.
Sometimes it's necessary to try different names utill you find one that feels right. MAX was first, then HAWAIIAN MAX (because I was being impersonated or too common so I was asked to make my name more unique), sometimes "33" (like Rolling Rock beer, get it?), sometimes Pink Keg, and then Combat Rock (but only when playing scrum).
Combat Rock started becoming well known so I went with that for a long time. Players just called me CR in the game. Then one day I went back to MAX and added CR so as to not lose Combat Rock's recognition.
Thus MAXCR.
Like anybody give a rat's @$$, right?
The point is, the name evolves and changes until one day it feels right. A player should be able to changed their name if the want, as long as it is not already taken. Demos are just going to experiment. New full version players are pretty good about this. The players that purposefully impersonate are just idiots and should be shot on site.
Although, last week someone logged in as Ri (Bot) and proceeded kick some serious bot. It took me 2 points to decide that it was a impostor. The reason I could tell was he was doing "Top player" type moves which Ri (Bot) is incapable of. So not only do newbies impersonate but some of the best players do it too. Since they chose Ri (Bot) at least they have a good sense of humor.
