Hardware Requirements for Torque 3D 1.2
by Weston Elliott · in Torque 3D Professional · 05/18/2012 (12:34 pm) · 31 replies
Hello, I'm building a new computer as my old computer was just barely able to run the Chinatown demo included with Torque 3D 1.2. I've looked at the minimum system requirements for Torque 3D and I would like to build a system able to run large detailed maps in Torque 3D smoothly. What would be your suggested build that would do so? I would like to stick to Intel processors as all the benchmark tests I've seen shows Intel i3/5/7 blowing AMD processors away. However, if you disagree and think AMD processors would work better for Torque, please let me know and explain why (so I may learn). I would also like to stick with Nvidia graphics cards, just because I am more familiar with them and Blender offers better support for Nvidia. Again, if you disagree and think a Radeon card would work better with Torque, please let me know and explain why. My budget is about $700 - $900max (anything lower would be better for my wallet though). Thank you for your input in advance!

i think he is suggesting 16gb for 4 ram slot.if u buy 2 4gb stick.then u only remain 2 stick for future addition.which mean u cannot make 32 gb(8+8+8=24 Gb max).if u have no plan for 32gb.then 8 gb ok.again i think 8gb will not do anything if your OS is 32 bit.32 bit can show only 3.85 or something like that.

So more than 1 year into owning this board and I am just now setting the fans to run quietly. So, make sure whatever board you get that you go in and enable the fan speed control. You have been warned of the possible hazards! :)

Here is something really funny and crazy. The Asus motherboard I mentioned I thought was kind of noisy. I bought it back in Jan 2011 (over 1 year ago). I noticed it getting louder last night. It was really bothering me. So I get a hardware monitor program and find the fans it can control are running at max rpm all the time. They are just now starting to show signs of wear. So I am upset and wondering what it going on. I look through the bios settings and realized I have not enabled the auto speed control of the fans!So more than 1 year into owning this board and I am just now setting the fans to run quietly. So, make sure whatever board you get that you go in and enable the fan speed control. You have been warned of the possible hazards! :)

i always run my fan at full speed.and they are 3 years old (cooler master) . it is all about careness to avoid "possible hazards" :)

instead of
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500Gb 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s
go for
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspxItem=N82E16822152185)
it is 1tb.and $79.99 with Promo Code: EMCYTZT1637.
so u are getting 500gb more for 5$.
also instead of
EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1Gb 192-bit.
go for
MSI N560GTX-M2D1GD5 GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127592
it is $139.99 after mail-in rebate card.so u will get a msi gtx 560 instead of evga's gtx 460.
but mail-rebate support from newegg is very bad.
so about GPU it is upto u.

I have had rebates take months to get back to me, I've had one or two take over a year, and I even had one never come back at all. I think I'll stick with the GTX 460. It's only about a 10% performance decrease anyway which I probably wouldn't notice.

Quote:instead ofThat actually sounds pretty good, thank you for pointing this out for me. But would the 3Gb/s difference be noticeable. As far as I've read, the hardware within most hard drives cannot move fast enough to even make it to 6Gb/s, but I am not sure of the performance differences between these two...

If 8Gb turns out not to be enough for me, then I will just upgrade to 16Gb, and if that isn't enough, then I'll yell at my computer until it works, haha.

For just running Torque you won't be needing more than 8GB RAM. Maybe not even for plain 3D modelling. Start looking at 16GB or more if you're using the computer for video and music creation. Even then only massive orchestral samples really push the limits of an 8GB system (or even 32GB).

@Ronny: Yeah, I don't plan on doing huge amounts of video or music creation. I highly doubt I will need anything more than 8Gb. The programs I will be using the most are Torque3D (for game dev), Blender (for modeling and perhaps light animation), and Audacity (for editing sound effects for the game).

No need for more, then. Just a fast hard drive/SSD for work stuff :)

Excellent! Well, I'm pretty set on my current configuration and will probably be ordering it within the next few days. Thank you all for your knowledgeable help and suggestions!

@ahsan: Thank you for your motherboard suggestion. I have gone ahead and added the Extreme3 series ASRock motherboard for the extra features and reliability. As for the power supply, is Rosewill a good brand? I haven't really heard anything about them. All I hear about are Corsair and Antec. Antec seems to run cheaper than Corsair but also seems to have just as good of a reputation as Corsair when it comes to reliability and quality.
