I have a few questions I'd like to ask, but I'll do it here as the answers may benefit others who might otherwise ask anyway. Hope you don't mind.

1. I'm assuming that you're using T3D 1.2, or are you working on TGE?

2. Is this a pc only affair or are you porting?

3. How developed are your current environments, and what is the average level map size? I take it from the setting that this will be in some kind of modern day nightmarish world? That is to say, it will fuse elements of modern realism with elements of fantasy. Is that about right?

4. Will the env artist be shaping the maps to fit an established layout/map, or will s/he be creating the levels with or without a level designer?

5. Can a quid pro quo agreement be arranged, to swap environment art work for some other art (like character modelling) once production has ended?

6. What kind of workload can artists coming into the project at this stage expect?

Thanks in advance.

Dan,

I'll probably be putting up another job post or may just edit this one. Also working on a website and a Facebook page. Anyways, to answer your questions.

1. For this project we are using T3D 1.2.

2. For now we are doing a PC but if the game takes off. We may do a mobile port, or maybe even console. For now we are focusing on a PC release.

3. Now we have lots of art from varies content packs that we've purchased. I would love to have an environment artist come in a create all new art specifically for this project but I understand the time and people need to eat. If someone is willing to do the environment art, and just take royalties that would be fantastic!
We have all the terrains, and working on the textures but the job would be either using the art we have or creating new art, according to the design doc. Placing the art in the level and creating the game's environments. There is a design doc for the levels giving a full description.
Yes the game will fuse elements of fantasy but in more modern environments.

4. It would be nice if s/he could create the art and shape the level but if they only feel comfortable doing the art. I would have to also find a level designer as well.

5. It depends, I'm willing to negotiate something.

6. Right now what a artist can expect, is to decide which to use the art we have or brand new. We are at a very early stage in development. We are still having some of the models done. So the workload is a nice size but I'll be helping out were I can.

I hope that answered your questions, feel free to contact me for more info.

Kory,

Thanks for the information. I'm very tempted to apply for that env artist position, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I've already got a lot to do on my own project, but if for some reason things change soon I think I might like to be a part of this. In the meantime, good luck. It sounds like it'll be fun!

Dan

Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm not experienced at level design, and feel that I have nothing to offer in this regard. Level design is about gameplay rather than aesthetics, as I'm sure you are well aware. I would really only be of help alongside a level designer. Someone who can tell me "I need a path through the mountains here. There's a boulder that falls from the cliff on entering the trigger here." That sort of thing.

Ideally I would have a very simple top-down view of the map witth annotations detailing what needs to go where, and I fill in that map with terrain, vegetation, rocks etc.
