Interesting Piracy Article PC Gamer Nov. 03

An interesting article in PC Gamer that many would like to read starting on p.49 of the Novemeber issue of PC Gamer. It has a mention about how Tribes 1 had more people playing it online than had units sold. As well as pondering if Looking Glass would still be in business if Piracy wasn't so rampant.

The aricle goes on to talk about what is being done on the legal front as well as what is being done with technology to fight this problem.

Well, they better re-do the article in light of bittorrent becoming one of the fastest ways to spread warez.

Personally, I think this is similar to the position the music industry is facing with MP3 files. Only the people who adapt and embrace that technology will eventually win.

Look at how there are so many "legitemate" places to buy MP3's online now, with the better ones being quite successful.

Make it easier for people to be good than bad, and inevitably they will follow the path of least resistance.

Second that - the main reason for the music industry (imho) loosing so many customers is basically that they didnt take in the new technology and use it for their own good. Instead they tried to pull ppl in with "copy protected CD's" and other old school technology.

Piracy is here to stay - so is p2p sharing. Its up to the industry (meaning us) to think up ways of using this rather thatn trying to fight it.

Some ppl would even call it evolution. In old times - should everyone have fought against the great industrial revolution at the time where production lines came into use? Where would we be today without a good shake up in the way things are done.

Amen Thomas, the publishers can't stop the wave, only ride it.
