Web Hosting (Need Recommendations)

by Jeremy Tilton · in General Discussion · 09/22/2003 (8:36 pm) · 23 replies

I had one2host hosting my site for a year and for some reason my site doesnt work and they aren't answering my emails. So they are on my s*&@ list. Needless to say, I need a new host. So who are you all using? I need around 200-500 megs of space, unlimited transfer, email adresses would be nice, etc etc. I'm willing to pay $50-$100 per year.

Another question: I had one2Host register my domain, when I go to another host, will they be able to still use that domain with no probs?

Lunarpages.com seems to be better than www.presage-designs.com .

The only thing I don't like about Lunarpages.com is that you have to register a domain name somewhere else if you want to use it with them. That shouldn't be too bad though.

There's also the issue that their lowest-priced plan is $7.99 per month. But they give you ALOT more than storage and bandwith than the plan offered for the same price by www.presage-designs.com . I'd rather go with them because then there would be no bandwith problems if my website becomes popular.

Fyi: Transfering a domain means that you already have a domain registered and being directed to one location and that you want it transfered to a different location.

The sites I'm running are being hosted from home. It's not as cheap as some of the alternatives (it's usually about $10 extra added to your internet bill) but you have direct access to the machine so you can have what ever software running you want. For us that means Lixux with Apache and TomCat.

The cost is to get a static IP. If you're already getting one, lucky you. Be sure to check to make sure that your ISP allows you to host web sites because even if your paying for the static IP you don't neccessarily get to host sites.

Happy searching.

I now officially use lunarpages.com for webhosting. I've been using it since Monday, and it seems to be pretty cool. It gives you a bunch of optional stuff (bulletin boards, CGI scripts, ect.) that you can use, which I'll look into soon.
