Web Hosting (Need Recommendations)

by Jeremy Tilton · in General Discussion · 09/22/2003 (8:36 pm) · 23 replies

I had one2host hosting my site for a year and for some reason my site doesnt work and they aren't answering my emails. So they are on my s*&@ list. Needless to say, I need a new host. So who are you all using? I need around 200-500 megs of space, unlimited transfer, email adresses would be nice, etc etc. I'm willing to pay $50-$100 per year.

Another question: I had one2Host register my domain, when I go to another host, will they be able to still use that domain with no probs?

MGT offers hosting.
www.maxgaming.net/store.htm
We hit the high end of what you want to pay. I wont say much, I'm an MGT employee afterall. (We host one of the IRC channels, so if you want to stop by and talk to us directly rather then use email, go right ahead)

Not too shabby, but I'd need more transfer. I mean 10 gigs IS a lot..but you never know with pictures and other things. I'll consider it though..thanks.

I recommend to check out www.gladiatorarenas.net/.

They mainly do gameing servers but they also do web hosting.

You can get a basic package for $5-US/month or a gold for $10-US/month (i think there is a $20-US setup fee). They both have all the server-side stuff and the gold offers you your 300 MB. They allow unlimited bandwith providing the site is not going to be like a file planet or just video streaming.

Just remember, normaly if the price is below 10/month for anything substancial, then its normally paid in full.

read the fine print :)

Click Here Now to Order the Standard Plan - $5.75 per month (Billed annually at $69)

Just so that you guys know there is no such thing as "unlimited bandwidth"...

The RealmWars hosting that we do with Aplus.net gives us "unlimited bandwidth" but when we were moving 200GB per month they quickly threatend to cancel the account because we were transfering too much data around. The high amount of traffic that we were creating with the site was slowing down their entire service because their servers were having difficulty keeping up with demand. When they say unlimited they mean about 10gb/mo (or maybe a little bit above, but within reason).

Just thought that some of you would care for that bit of info when considering web hosting services.

Use me...

www.vapournet.com

We're not a big company, but we'll offer space to anyone and we'll haggle over the price. Also, because we're not that big, our support is second to none. Need software installed on the server? No problem...

I use www.presage-designs.com VERY dependable, I host www.noblenerds.com, and www.gavinmiller.net off of it.

I use www.millcreekdigital.com. Great rates, and the guys who run it are gamers. They have an emphasis on security, which is important when doing any kind of e-commerce sites.

I compared all the different sites listed here.

www.presage-designs.com looks like the best. I think I'll sign up with it soon. Tripod is just giving me too many problems.

www.presage-designs.com gives you webhosting for $4.99 a month (for it's lowest-priced option - which should be good enough for me for a while) and tells you that domain registration costs $11.95 per year.

The other places that offer domain registration seem to add $2 or so to the monthly price instead (so that would be $24 per year).

In my opinion, the webservers that do NOT offer domain registration (or at least the ability to use a domain name you've already registered) aren't realistic options.

If anyone knows of any better options or has any comments, I would like to hear their opinions before I start shelling out the cash. Otherwise, I'll start using www.presage-designs.com as soon as Ecoheroes is done.

Does presage designs allow you to use a domain name you've already registered elsewhere?

11.95 is expensive.

Www.1and1.com is offering free hosting for 3 years, no contract, no cc required, no ads...500mb, 5gb/month bandwidth (extra bandwidth is $1 per gig) php, mysql, etc...I've just signed up with them a week or so ago, seems good so far.

About www.presage-designs.com :

Well, I haven't seen any domain registration fees less than $8 per year, which isn't much less than the $11.95. The $4.99 per month for the hosting is only a little less than the cheapest I've seen elsewhere, but you're saving that little bit each month.

The thing about www.presage-designs.com is that their "lite" $4.99 package is obviously just there in the hopes that you'll eventually need to move up to a better hosting package (there are some that are only a little more, and some that are alot). If your site is popular, this WILL be the case.

But if your site is popular you'll have the money to upgrade anyways. And it's not all that much more expensive.

Jay Barnson:

www.presage-designs.com says something about "transferring" a domain name. I don't know whether that means transferring a domain you already own or transferring someone else's domain name to you (presumably with the original owner's permission).

Maybe you can email their customer support or something to find out.

About Www.1and1.com :

The problem with Www.1and1.com is that after the 3 years it costs $29 per month. They're just having some sort of special offer.

I didn't even look at anything else on the site because I'm looking for permanent hosting - I don't want the hassle of switching every couple of years. And I won't pay $29 a month for what I can get for $4.99 a month.

It may have additional features that are great, but I don't think I really need much.
