Has any one made a waterplane into lava yet in 1.2

just looking for ideas best way to go at this seems lava isn't a option any more for type

Yeah, it irked me when I fixed the old damageDt() method and the new water was added, without water types, that very same day.

Simplest way, without forcing you re-add the water type functionality, would be to place a kill trigger or a more specialized you-just-entered-unsafe-water trigger at the waterplane's height making sure that it covers the mission area (or applicable terrain area). Inside your trigger you could damage-over-time or insta-kill as you desire.
