Just being online at any given moment can pose a risk. You are no safer or in more danger hosting a server.
A true hacker scans the internet for open ports to access comps. Thats the basic idea, its more complicated than that.

If you are truly worried, purchase a firewall, or dowload the free ZoneAlarm. (I think it's zonealarm.com, im not sure)

But if you are extremely paranoid, maybe you should rethink having internet access.

Just remember this: One day my firewall said over 500 attempts to access my comp were read.
I got "lucky" that day.
The chances of a hacker to access your comp, to do harmfull acts is very low. Maybe 1 in 100, probably less.

500, yeah. I've blocked out almost 200,000 since febuary. You don't know hoe much you're being hacked until you have a firewall.

Yeah but if you get a firewall i don't think anyone else can join games you create. No one can join mine, and I think it is because of that. That would mean that all of you (FP, Z, Loler if you host the SL server) don't have firewalls though...

If you configure your firewall and game properly you will still be able to host games.

Open up UDP port 28000 tp host.

When I host I usually log ip's. I've never had a problem with hackers really. A few of our skallywags have attemted to port scan me. LOL I know who they are.

Carlo you should have no problem if the proper security measures are in place. Just logging in to a hosting server should not give you access to anything other than the game.

Well I thank for all u'r good advices, I really apreciate it:)

I hope FP takes a look at this treath topic, cus today he told me I could do something about having a fire wall, and and host a game, and still be protected.

FP if u ever drop by, please specify in detail what settings I need to change in my fire wall to be able to do that.

once again, thanks yu'll

(ps. I thank u for reconsidering your opinion Nathan, although I know u meant it as a mild joke, but not to worry, it's cool).

If you are connected to the internet, and you are using WindowsP (or any flavor of Windows), our game will be the least of your worries.

;)

We cannot guarantee that no one will be able to hack into your system if you are open to the internet (which you must be in order to host)

At home I run Zone Alarm and I have had no problems with hack attacks.

Thanks for the warning joe, I really apreciate u'r help:)

do u think u will ever make the server go on a different computer, kind of what westwood does, where the srever is managed by another computer?

my father says he will feel much safer if the internet games are monitored by another computer.

see my father is worried to open the fire wall, and it will make our network suseptivle to hackers( we have a network of about 6 computers) so he'th rather not take a risk.

if there is any way at all to host a game an still be protected by firewall, please let me know.

thank u very much:) !!!

The dedicated server is there for doing exactly what you describe. Most of the servers you can see online are dedicated servers running on Linux machines that do nothing but run the games.

If you want, you can set up a machine specifically as the game server and join the game from another machine.

I doubt real hackers will attack you in any damaging way. In fact the real ones mainly mess with large companys. You will mainly deal with script kiddies. A simple firewall can stop most of them.
