Linux Dedicated server?

Hello everyone.
Does anyone know if this is possible? I tried running a dedicated server (had to hard code the dedicated server argument) using Wine on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, with DirectX installed, but this didn't work out very well, primarily because DX9 doesn't initialise in a VNC session, and Wine is very volatile and crashed whenever the dedicated was launched.
So, is there a way to compile a linux specific dedicated server? Or will it be to the drawing board for me?
Cheers.

Going the VNC/Wine/etc direction seems like an exercise in frustration.
