Best for top down Action RPG 2d / 3d kit

I was not sure where to post this so I figured I would slap it up here. I am interested in researching the necessities of making a top down action RPG similar to the Baldur's Gate games. I want to keep the project humble so that I can actually stand a chance of finishing it but I do want it to LOOK like a current game, i.e. a lot of graphical bells and whistles.

The idea I have is to forego the typical inventory management game interspersed with finding new stuff to manage in your inventory. I want to make the game revolve more around the story, characters, setting, and action. I do not know if that makes a difference or not in which type of kit I use to make the game. My only skills lie in art and story and ( maybe ) design so I imagine that DOES maek a difference as to whether I use the 2d kit or the 3d kit.

IF I ever get the game made, then the ultimate goal is to make it available via XBLA / PSN I imagien that makes a difference as well.

i really appreciate any patient advise I may recieve.

Cheers,

Tre'

Firstly, I'm getting the impression that you think a game engine + content packs = game. Maybe you don't, but just in case you do - it's not that easy.

Okay, so now that that's been said, I would suggest you go for T2D for a couple of reasons. The development pipeline should be somewhat faster with the 2D option, leaving you time to get writing story etc.. Also the 2D option will allow you to rapidly prototype your game without spending stupid amounts of time making it look pretty.

I agree with Dan. I've been working on something similar using T2D off and on since June and I already have enemies, NPCs, spells, and melee combat. It's working out very well. The hardest aspect is getting good art since I'm not an artist. If you cannot do art I imagine that will be the most difficult aspect for you as well.

There are programs to make 3D models into 2D sprites so you could still use any 3D models and art packs that are available although it is a pretty time consuming process to convert them and expensive to boot.
