Help me understand what is happening with color in T3D

by Greg Albright · in Artist Corner · 10/13/2011 (2:05 pm) · 2 replies

Ok, when I bring in texture colors that are bright and colorful, like they appear IRL, Torque3D makes the colors super bright, and it gives the overall render a cartoony/CGI look. To get textures and colors that look somewhat realistic, I have to use these really muted desaturated colors...

My first thought is that there is a gamma setting somewhere for me to adjust. But then... everybody runs a different gamma based upon what they like.

So I am not really knowledgeable about computer color enough to pose an interesting question... But any explaniation about what is going on here would be helpful.

I feel I have to explain my avatar. That was the first thing I did in Sculptris that didn't explode all over the place. Version 2. ZOMG when you guys where helping me switch to max why didn't you say Mudbox? Oh wait you did and I ignored you.

Adjust the colours for your lighting and your ambiance to hit the sweet spot. Realistic lighting is possible with T3D, but sometimes you need to play with it for a bit. Sometimes I spend hours just tweaking on lighting alone. Here's a screenshot of Alan James 'Downtown District' art pack for more of a realistic scene and lighting:

Screen shots of your issue will help.
