the big picture: t2dTileMaps

Hi there,
I am just hoping to get some feedback on the purpose of a t2dTileMap. Is it mostly aesthetics x memory? I understand you can individually tap a tile and alter its sprite for instance, but beyond that, is it safe to say it is just a way to produce background image effect, walls, floor ceiling, using minimal memory?
