satire games dead?

by Terra Snover · in General Discussion · 06/28/2011 (10:17 am) · 2 replies

I wanted to talk about something that has been of late lacking in the gaming, satire games. I know duke nukem forever tried to satire FPS games but it was kind of an epic fail. The last true satire game I can think of (that worked that is) is Gex enter the gecko for the ps1.
Am I wrong that this kind of game seems dead? Why has there been such a lack of these games over the years? And are they worth bringing back?

I guess that could depend on your definition of satire, but the modern world makes sure that satiring real life people can lead you to lawsuits.

Also satire requires an intimate knowledge of the subject you are satirising and as such does limit you market, that said, thats only an excuse for the ever fatting fat cats of the massive corporate distributors who wont distribute games unless you can almost guarantee x number of sales. But its seems a valid option for indie devs with indie distributions, i'm pretty sure if you look around theres more than a few satirical games out there.

My final point is one that satire is humour, and humour is a very tricky subject simply becasuse everyone has different takes on whats funny, the two games you mentionsm, are only a failure and good based on your opinion of them, i'm pretty sure theres somebody out there who loves DNF and hates gex, gamers are fickle at the best of times, adding a 'marmite' to the mix is maybe asking for trouble if you want to make it big? i dunno, just to add to the games.. Simon the sorcerer was probably the only game that would fit into the satirical genre that i really liked.
