Best Players

by Jeff Axline · in ThinkTanks · 09/04/2003 (2:24 pm) · 45 replies

I thought I'd start a fun thread. For best players I'll nominate Dan M just because he was such a GOD when I first bought this game. I don't even know if he still plays or how he'd stack up now that there are a lot of experienced players. For someone who is just fun to game with I will say Azazel.
I'll let #1 Tankster nominate himself ;*)

What a topic. I will rate scrum players alone since I am seldom in Battlemode and also because it requires all the skills of Battlemode and many, many more.

There are 3 distinct strategies and/or classes of scrum player.

The eliminator: They will kill you before you get to the goal, and sometimes during and after.

#1 TANKSTER is the #1 in this catagory. He is a pain to play with sometimes.. I have almost wore my spacebar out because of him, but I look forward to the challenge. He seldomly takes the scrum any other way, unless you are very close to the goal.

The thief They will steal the scrum no matter how hard you try to avoid them.. they seem to be everywhere... They can drive frontwards and backwards using the radar alone 40% of the game! They will hit you in midair, pin you against rocks, and use pads to great advantage. They seldom shoot you.. they seldom have to.

Tally Ho wins my vote in this catagory. As I have stated in the scrum tips on my website.. "He is everywhere you want to be."

The camper This camper isn't the goofy DEMOs who block goals and piss off the vets.. this camper is a viper with skill. A good camper can camp a goal, a rock, a tree, or any piece of terrain along your patch to the goal. They will spring out from behind a rise just when you think its a free run. These guys love people who don't use the radar.

Although many of us use this style.. I have to give props to my favorite camper of all time..
DEMO FoulPlay

But when it comes to best of the best.. I would have to list all the current scrum league players. Maybe someday someone will come along and usurp the OGs.. maybe not.

Him is good too =P

In my short 2 month career in tanks. .... There are some players I have not been able to beat. Don't really do battlemode, except when #1 tankster or FoulPlay are in.

The Thief: Tally_ho - most killable, at least put a hurt on him so you can kill him when he takes the scum away at the goal
The all around player: Tank_dork - Probably plays more hours than anyone
Uncatagorical: HugeBraino (sp?) - Can't figure out how to beat him. Good player to have on your team.

The eliminator: #1 Tankster - With him as a teammate combined with my gun, I smell death. Shoot first, ask questions later ...
Most kill the Prey: FoulPlay - always coming up the tailpipe.

Most of the aforementioned nominations are no brainers... I concur (with my month or so worth of experience). MESS is also good, although I suspect he is someone's alter ego. Devestator is quite adept in battlemode.

Of those who I consider to be in my cohort (long live the rookies!):
Clax and Max are masters 'o the scrum
Ben is deadly at battlemode

Not sure how long *cowboy* has been playing, but I remember marvelling at his battlemode scores whilst I was but a wee demo.

Baklava is also excellent in battlemode when he's not shooting himself with bounceback.

Very amusing thread, saddened by the fact that the culmination of my 24 years of life experience makes among the best....think tank players.

fresh :).

everybody is dope. one of the reasons i push for a low level of customization in the skin depo is that i can see more easily what everyone is doing in-game. i saw something az did last night, a sweet tactical move, and thought it pretty fresh to note the skills and methods of others beyond just the scoreboard.

the scrum can be so cruel.

in other news, i change the thread direction a bit towards competition. no doubt, hugo gives me the hardest time out there, always laying down clips my way, hounding me. i think this strategy began in a league game a few weeks ago, something his team worked out beforehand perhaps. they proceeded to annhilate us if i remember correctly; i spent the whole time running back from fooky spawns. total shutdown. total pain in the arse. props to you.

where is tanky hiding...

I like the way LC handles his Heavy. Tally Ho, Tankster and a couple others give me some good challenges during scrum games (above and beyond just shooting my Heavy to death for the hell of it -- something I still can't quite figure out why even experienced players do considering I usually end up spawning in the goal... hmmm).

I guess I'm going to have to get in there and steal more with my Heavy to prove I belong in the Thief category. :)

I can't even get nominated on my own thread! Jeez, can't you guys take a hint?
As far as competition, it seems that I see new players every day that I think I'll woop up on because I haven't seen them before. Then I find out they are damn good. Are some of you guys changing names on us or are newbies doing alot of offline gaming before coming online?
One more thing- I thought this thread might be kind of lame when I started it but it is quite interesting. Think Tanks is one great game.

Wal.. You have a primarily offensive style.. so I would say thief.

Offensive as in non-defensive.. not as in bad =P

Tank Dork

The categories break down different styles of play quite nicely.

The eliminator: Dan MacDonald without a shadow of a doubt.

The Ex-Camper: FoulPlay. Current Camper - not sure... maybe now this belongs to Demo Poland?

The Thief: heh.. going to have to nominate Tally here as well. If I had a dollar for every time he has poached the scrum from me, I'd be rich enough to be able to play this game 24-7. However.. TD is quite adept in this category too.

I would also like to add another category.. The Defender. He who excels in blocking the enemy from a late steal or from chasing down the tank with the scrum and taking the fire instead. There are a few in this category, but I'd certainly gladly appreciate Clax, Hugo, Azazel or TD performing this role if I had the scrum. All can be great defenders.
