Pretty much nothing working right

I just downloaded and installed the version 1.7.5 demo of TGB. Along with some common problems, such as the mouse position not lining up correctly with buttons and dialogs, pretty much everything else seems to be broken. I can't drag-and-drop any files into the Torque Game Builder, they simply don't show up in the GUI after I drop them. After importing an image using the "Create Image Map" button, when I double-click on it to bring up its properties (say, to change it to cell format), the preview pane is blank gray, the drop-down boxes are blank (no "FULL" or "CELL" selected), sometimes the first check-box is checked, sometimes not, and no changes I make seem to have any effect. When I click the button to create a new animation, the "Source" window is always empty no matter what images I have loaded.
I've tried downloading the files from the GarageGames site several times and uninstalling/reinstalling, as well as running a registry cleaner, trying to get rid of leftovers from the previous installations. I've also tried every combination of compatibility modes and options, with no success. Finally, I installed the demo in a Windows XP virtual machine, and in there it seems to be running OK. I'd really prefer not to have to use the virtual machine solution, so any suggestions are welcome.
My system specs:
Acer laptop, not sure about the motherboard, some ATI chipset
AMD Athlon II X2 P340
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
Four gigs DDR3
Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack I

I would recommend against using drag-and-drop.
Set your video settings to D3D. It sounds like you're running into a problem between OpenGL/D3D with your cursor being in the wrong place.

I haven't seen anyone else having the plethora of problems that you're seeing, and I've never seen the images doing what you're describing. So I'm not quite sure about what may be happening there.I would recommend against using drag-and-drop.

That, along with changing the video mode to D3D as David said should correct that problem.

The cursor offset is a known issue with some ATI cards and 1.7.5. There are a couple ways to try and fix it. First make sure your video driver is up to date, then go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming and delete the TorquePowered folder. AppData is a hidden folder so you'll have to enable View Hidden Folders if it isn't.That, along with changing the video mode to D3D as David said should correct that problem.
