And is it possible to do all this on a laptop? I know laugh at me im a indie programmer and cash flow is low (1,000) to be exact. But I have high hope just need a push in the right direction. But I have to add, that it's important to have the basic concept even before the coding. You can very quickly end up in the tech-nirvana. Because the development possibilities are endless and that can make you loose your focus on the actual game idea/vision. I just recommended this Book in another thread. It's perfect for story based games.
For the tools, you can use Blender 3D for the 3D-models, Gimp or Photoshop for textures, Trubones's motion capture files and the Ambient Sounds Collection for the mood.
For the eye candy later on I recommend the Liman 3D shader and texture pack.
If you have a lot interiors a la Resident Evil 1, there is this nice tool called pureLIGHT, but that's more considerable for the Future ;)

I'd be interested in helping if I can. Two novices are better than one perhaps.

Yes, it can be done. I usually work from my laptop. But the machine in question and it's capability, whether it is a desktop system or otherwise, is the determining factor.
As you add the details of quality and polish you increase the system requirements so keep that in mind. You'll need to estimate a minimum system spec that your game will require and design/build with that low-end system in mind. Only as you progress will you be able to know where optimization is needed.
Oh, and good luck!

I advise to keep it really simple at the beginning. Focus on GAMEPLAY elements and stray from serious story stuff until you have the actual game created. Much easier to build a narrative when you have the pages and pens to write with. Mario had to be able to run and jump before he could rescue the princess!
Also, I develop on a laptop (i7+ATI) and desktop(C2D + Nvidia), so it's entirely possible as long as your system meets the minimum requirements.
When you have more scripting and technical type questions, the best place to ask is the Private Torque 3D forums. Good Luck!
