Making Unreal maps without the Unreal editor?

by Eli McClanahan · in Artist Corner · 08/31/2003 (10:51 pm) · 3 replies

I'm working with UT2K3, but have become spurned to its editor's tendencies to crash randomly, along with its overcomplexity and poor terrain support. Is there any other program I can use to export a map to Unreal Tournament 2003?

It crashes some times, yes... make sure you have the latest version (if you have a legal copy that is), that will help a lot.
And poor terrain support? If that's poor terrain support then what is Torque? Its the best terrain I've seen so far.
Make sure you read some tutorials before saying its too complex. If you are used to map for other games, then your mapping approach will most likely have to change a bit... it works somewhat different, but the basics are the same, and once you get the hang of it its not difficult at all.

Torque has great terrain support. It doesn't look great because of the engine but it's functional and simple to work with.

Yes, it's legal and yes it's the latest copy.

I say it's overly-complex because you have to go through 10 steps just to make a heightmap.

UnrealEd is a very powerful tool, however it definatly feels like it's a simple editor with a million bolt ons. There's not really any viable alternatives for working with UT2K3.

And yes it crashes a lot... usually on saving for me, which is just "the best" time for it...
