Best 3D Modeling

by Chad \"DigitalEagle\" Kullhem · in General Discussion · 08/31/2003 (6:02 pm) · 7 replies

Here's my situation.

I learned to model using 3D studio max, but I can't afford to buy it. So is there a free or cheap 3D modeling program that can even compair to 3DS or is at least similar in the way it works? I've tried Milk Shape and TrueSpace3, but I don't want to spend time learning one of these if there is a better one out there for free/cheap.

I just need something tell I can buy 3DS max.

Any suggestions?

Gmax is pretty good. Check it out:

Hope that helps......

I am aware of Gmax. but Gmax can't export to anything but a just a few games and can't render at all. I need something with some good use.

For modelling, I love Wings3d. It doesn't do animation or anything beyond modelling, but it does export to several formats. Blender is also pretty popular. Everyone says Blender has a hefty learning curve, but once you get used to the fact that it does things differently than anyone else, it's not that bad.

I'll second Wings3D, the modelling is fairly similar to max's polygon tools. Obviously not 100% but free is always good :)

You'll need an external uvmapping program though, but there are some good cheap ones that are easily on par with Max's unwrap feature.

I must to say, as a professioanl 3d artist, If you are choosing a free program, you must to make ready to yourself a lots of limitations.
Choose lightwave, its much cheaper than max, easier to use, and much complex and kick-ass stuff than any of those free or sw stuffs.

If you are thinking in a very low poli modelling, then you can to use Milkshape for a while...but not forever, its limited too.
