Customizable Weapons Model Pack [Idea]

by Robert Hartley · in Torque 3D Beginner · 03/22/2011 (1:03 am) · 7 replies

I have recently been playing with the idea of a completely customizable weapons pack, by that i mean the parts that are used to make the gun as separate models to be combined in your modeling program to get the kind of effect you want.

An example would be say, the handle of an m16, receiver of a SCAR, barrel of ACR and like a stock off a G36 combined to make the gun i just chose parts from then.

I would - before i released the pack - make the actual guns that those parts are used to assemble.

My plan is currently about 5-10 pistols/sidearms.
10-20 Assault rifles/primaries.
2-5 Heavy machine guns ('cause they're irritating to model).
5-10 SMG's.
5-10 sniper rifles (and more than one bolt action, 'cause only having one - *looks at mw2 case* - sucks).
and a few knives, grenade, utilities (flashlight, flare gun etc).
and some good old rocket launchers.
and general attachments e.g. scopes, silencers

In terms of the completion of the model each will be uv'd, i'm thinking maybe 2 lod's (world, view models)

The generic guns that i put together from the parts will have hands and be animated

*note that hands will belong to a female character as they will be participating in my project that iv'e decided to pause to make this model pack.

**note the weapons will NOT be torque ready (unless i can figure out how to script them)
p.s. if you can teach me how to do that you can have the model pack for free. :P

***note don't expect me to get this out there soon, im 14 (mainly doing this because my mates are getting jobs and im to lazy to go to the golden arches or wherever to earn $8.99 an hour) and im also restricted on time (2 hours/weekday(gotta love parents yea?)) and also assignments school etc, etc.

the input i need from the community is:

would the extremely customizable weapons be unnecessary
what else would you like to see in it
and of course how much one would pay for it (this may be hard to answer until i get some screen-shots up)

and one question: does torque 3d support holes in meshes?

I can help with the scripting :)
This seems like a good weapon set. Good luck.

And for your question, do you mean such as a hollow pipe? Then yes.

Thank you very much, i'm assembling the list now so ill make a new post soon.

and in holes i mean those weird "glitches" where you see straight through the gun and occasionally so faces from the inside, its a technique used to lower poly count.

I'm sorry, I don't know what that is. I don't do a lot of modeling.

This is a pretty massive list and will more than likely take me for ever and a half (thinking of breaking them up into separate model packs). I also have absolutely no idea in terms of pricing. Also it will be a pretty large download (another reason for multiple packs) Not thinking of adding any more yet (except rocket launchers which i didn't list).

Given that you don't have a lot of time (school, etc), I'd definitely go with separate model packs and start with just one simple one. Think of it as a proof of concept. If it works out and you end up doing everything on your list, you could always combine that as one big bundle.

That is my intention, and sorry i havn't gotten any screenshots up, but im sure you remember end of term in grade 9? Im hoping to make one of each category and realsing them completely free, like you said proof of concept. Also in terms of positioning how close do you guys want the weapons to the face, because looking at Modernwarfare etc the sheer closeness of even pistols, you'd be hit in the face by the slide every shot you made. I'll hopefully have that first preview pack out over the holidays, or at least one or two of the weapons. Ill be at my dads who i haven't seen for a year so im sure you'll all understand.

(Also, in terms of pricing i still have no idea).

I'd be interested in any weapons pack like this but mixing and matching the parts isn't important. Pricing depends on quality which we can't predict really, also it depends how much further work they require to get up and running in a game.

The L85 isn't a machine gun, it's an assualt rifle. An L86 support weapon does exist although it's largely been replaced with the more practical Minimi. I would suggest the FN Mag (M240) as a popular MG.
L85 would still be welcome though.
