Water wave directions

Is it possible to modify the directions of the waves of a water plane during gameplay? I can modify the direction values as shown in the Inspector dynamically but the water plane doesn't update. Is there an update method I'm missing?
This doesn't involve multi-player networking, it's for a single-player only project.
