Student Software Licenses?

I'm currently going through graduate studies and have been thinking of picking up some development software as a student. Is there any particular software that would be good to get a hold of both for software quality and good student licenses (don't pay $500 for something that expires next year)?
I've been thinking something like Adobe CS5 for 2d art and Autodesk for 3d art but am having a hard time tracking down licensing details and don't know if alternatives would be better.

Thanks for the input, this is primarily for me to learn what I'm doing so I can wait a month for CS6. I figure if my learning becomes commercial I can purchase the full license at that point. They really need to sell a non-profit license at the same price point as student and make it upgradeable for us little people but...
