Non direct sun-lit items are too dark

I've been playing with Torque 3D for just a few hours & I'm relly impressed. I've constructed & rendered my terrain, added basic blue sky + clouds + sun. I've added an ocean. And now I'm starting to place models.
It's all been really easy to do & the results look impressive. However I have just one small issue about the appearance of the scene that isn't quite right.
All the shapes that are in direct sunlight are nice & bright & I would say their brightness is spot on. However, shapes that are not in direct sunlight seem far too dark - I'd like to brighten them up - not as bright as the stuff in direct sunlight obviously - but brighter than thay are at the moment. Basically the contrast been lit & shaded areas is just too great.
Is there an eaasy way to do this? I've tried a search of the manual & of the forums but I can't seem to find an reference to how to do this.

(Not sure why I missed that - I thought I'd tried "everything").
Thanks again
