Few Questions from the New Guy

Hello everyone,
I just purchased my copy of Torque 3D after a while of debating (and lots of research via the resources/forums) and even though I have found many of my answers and even some interesting ones I hadn't thought of, I still have a few that hopefully haven't been asked too much.
First off: In the guide I see the Sketch Tool and in one of the blogs I see it's in the Beta 1.1 - which I currently have installed(1.1 beta 3). I can't seem to find that in my toolbar though nor the forest editor.
Second is more me having pet peeves.

Hopefully someone gets this I'm not sure how to explain it. My grass Texture is one solid color - yet if you look closely you see blotches of lighter/darker random parts? Is there a way to disable this or am I doing something wrong? I read somewhere that extending the terrain size will increase the depth of details shown but it's not so much the detail as the fading of one color to another.

Every time I bump into the rat all is fine and dandy yet when I crash into the deer my screen actually freezes. I played around and saw the node section and could only figure that the deer cause me to froze due to the detail? I didn't make any of them was importing random DAEs just to make sure I got the flow down. Is that actually why I am freezing or is it a setting I am doing wrong? My last question ties into this. I have worked with Maya in the past but for quick decent models I must admit I love Zbrush - I have no problem importing into Maya then DAE but of course once I toggle the collission type to visible mesh that also locks my screen up. I've seen a few examples in the resources with some nice looking detailed characters - any tips?
Thanks in advance.

@Steve Thanks a lot. I did have the correct beta installed. I simply un-installed it and the demo then did a fresh install and it worked out great. Thanks for all your answers, you were on the spot.

Steves one of the stars of the forums, always on hand to offer an answer/advice and quite often even a joke to go with them -- what more could you want?Well maybe a free kitten or bunny slippers with each post
Glad you got it working

Sketch tool is the box (F5). Forest is the leaf (F8)
Are you sure you've done the following: linky
2) blotches - that's your diffuse texture sized huge - make the size smaller for small tiling.
3) Visible Mesh collision I wager. Visible mesh is expensive for cpu power. If each poly is in contact then each poly sends callbacks. You shouldn't be using visible mesh for these sort of things - check the docs about collision - here's the art primer link
4) I've never used Maya, can't help
