Developer Looking for Entry Point (Looking for Team)

by Matt · in Jobs · 02/06/2011 (3:24 pm) · 15 replies

Hello,

I'm currently a Computer/Software Engineering major looking for a team to start making games with GarageGames engines.

I'm completely new to GarageGames engines, but am fairly well versed with C++ and web technologies. Instead of wasting my time making mods to the demo engines ship with - I rather jump right in and start making small things for an actual game. Yes, I suspect some will question this logic, but I'm ready to hit the ground running, not to make some pointless mod to learn a few basics. I can do that with something meaningful that will actually be used. Which is what brings me here.

My ideal set-up would be something along the lines of:

1. Okay Matt here's what we need. (hand over specs) You can find some good references at a, b and c. Let us know if you need some direction.

2. I complete scripting, module, class...etc as requested and move onto the next assignment...kind of like an internship.

I really don't want to do any web development because that is my 'Day Job' and I'm trying to move away from it and into system/application programming. I'm willing to bite the bullet and do web-work at some point if it helps the team move forward.

I prefer to work with groups that have a solid game idea that is well documented. Please have a proposal ready that will detail how you plan to complete the project and clearly indicate what the intentions are (paid, hobby, if paid - who gets what ...etc).

I'm open for both paid and unpaid positions at this time.

Thanks,
-Matt

Ok, where do i start?. We are interested!

We are 2 people team working on a third person shooter.
I am a skilled 3D-Artist with additional basic skills in all development categories.

Since this is our first big project it would be a perfect starting point for you as well. We keep the game-play simple but the content will be advanced with motion capture driven characters and movie-like cut-scenes. And as shader candy as necessary.

My partner and i developed the story and content concept over the last 6 months, but since it was only the two of us, we have to write down the design document for you.

It'll be ready next Monday. If you are interested write me a mail:
alex at outorange.com

Our Blog: Outrageous Orange
(There will be more content, since content creation starts this month.)

After receiving many inquiries, I have chosen a team to work with.

I'm no longer available and look forward to a successful project with my new team.

Thanks again for all the inquiries.

Hello dear Matt.

I'm sorry to hear that your team died.

It's always frustrating to put time and effort in something that doesnt come into fruition.

We currently have two programmers that are working with us.
We are working on our project for quite a time but never give up no matter what ups and downs are coming our way.

We were working with the TGE engine but switched to the T3D engine (latest build) a few months ago.

Due to the differences we started with a clean build and reworked most of the code.

Our game is based on royalties after release and we work together over email and our development forum. Updates on our build happen over SVN (our own server).

Our working is unfortunately slow paced since we all have main jobs to attend and because its (sad but true) very hard to find reliable people that stick with a team.

Our progress is still steady and a give up is not an option. :)

Currently active with:
- 1 game designer/producer/writer/level designer
- 1 art director/animator/modeler
- 1 general Modeler/texturer
- 2 programmers
- 1 music director/comboser
- 1 writer

Currently inactive:

- 2 modelers
- 2 concept artists

If you would be interested to work in a sci fi rpg and don't mind the slow pace, feel free to drop me a email at fm95master@hotmail.com so we can talk about whats needed and I can introduce you to our project further.

Thanks for your time!

Eric: Thanks for your inquiry, unfortunately I'm more interested in joining a team that's already developed and cannot take on a leadership role. Again, thanks for the offer though.

Antonios: Email sent. Thanks!

You have my email and we could had cleared everything up in email form.

I tried several times but you didn't wanted to talk over email for whatever reason.

You suggested googletalk and I tried to add it into my account but my gmail account wouldn't let me because my gmail is connected to my youtube obviously asking me to create a new account.

I tried and it said that the information I added is free but everytime I finished registering it brought me a error.

After this I let you know per email.

So I asked if we could indeed use a other messenger and you said you will create a msn messenger ID.

I asked you for your nickname so I can add you but you never gave it to me, I went online everyday after work waiting for you to appear after I had gave you my availability hours and I never got a invitation from you.

Wrote you a email about it and nothing came back.

I spent the whole weekend on and off and another week checking for a invitation but it didn't happen.

I wrote you another email and you didn't responded.

Now a month later and to my surprise you are writing here instead of writing an email again doing as if you were trying to get a hold of me on msn even you never bothered to send a friend invitation so I can add you?

Is that a joke?

I need reliable people that mean what they say and can be communicative in my team. You proved that this is something you definately aren't.

Due to this I didn't tried again cause it was obvious that you aren't as interested as you imply to be.

I Wish you all the best for the future though and with a other team.
Good luck.

Antonios: I'm not even going to get into it with you. I'll leave it at this... If you want that kind of reliability you can send me a pay check each month. My hourly rate is 45/hour and I require 30% to get started. I'm looking for a volunteer role, not a for hire role. I'll give what I can when I can, and will give priority to my paid work. I tried to get in contact with you over MSN a couple weeks ago and I've been 'monitoring it' for sometime before you actually appeared online. I tried sending you messages on there several times with no response. My apologies that GTalk was so hard for you to figure out. It's really not hard. Best of luck to you as well. I replied on here instead of email so OTHER people could still see I'm interested because at the time of post it was obvious that I'm not going to work with you.

Kory: Email sent.

Oh! That means that you are writing that you want a volunteer entry but one has to pay you so you can send a email to them or be communicative at all? Now that's priceless!

GTalk wasnt hard for me to figure out. I already told you that I always got an error during the registration and I even offered to send you screenshots of the error so you can see for yourself.

I offered you several times to ask whatever question you had over email but you were too lazy to go that way obviously.

- Wrote you emails and got no reply.

- Asked for your MSN ID so I can add you and contact you over the messenger and got no reply.

- I got NO friend invitation so I can see you online on msn ever.

- Told you that if you have a other project running that all you need to do is to tell me and we could start together a other time but you never gave real info about it

- Spent two weeks waiting for you on the messenger and trying to reach you over email with no interest showing from your side

- a month has passed and then you come here to show that you are "interested" in other projects by writing that you are "trying to get a hold of me on the messenger"?

Saying that you were monitoring a "couple of weeks ago" means that you started "monitoring" someone you never gave the chance to find you on msn because you weren't willing to send a friend invitation and someone that after 2 weeks of trying to get ahold of you gave up on believing that you even had an interest to be a part of their team.

That shows also through your posts here.

If you wanted to show "others" that you are available again, you would had just wrote "I'm available for other projects again" and everything would be fine.

Instead of that, you are doing as if you were desperately trying to get a hold of me as if I would be unreliable and thats a no go.

Most of all since its a lie!

Go give your hypocrisy someone else please cause what you are doing and saying doesn't make sense.

If you saying someone that you are interested to join their project then you try to exchange infos and show real interest instead of rejecting any email communication and going on a trip of arrogance now as if others didn't do enough.

Honesty will get you a long way in a team, arrogance rather not.

Hey Matt,

We are in the process of finalizing Epoch over the next month, with the demo launch being October 31st. The team is already well balanced, but we are looking to recruit a few more folks to give us a bit more time for testing and optimization. You can see more about our game at http://www.risegaming.com/rpg/forums/.

If this interests you, please send me an email at wphelps@risegaming.com and we'll see if this works for you. At this stage, we're only finishing the proof of concept, nothing more and nothing less, with the aim of making the demo as polished as a AAA game and using this for investments. We are not kidding ourselves on trying to build a full RPG to the scale we're aiming.

Team is 25 strong, max of 50 at times since April, and the core team itself is 10 folks covering all aspects of production since the start so we have no worries about anyone leaving causing a collapse in the product. Anyone coming in now has guaranteed royalties regardless if they stick through after funding, and the best developers will move forward in the team if they want which is a guaranteed salary plus additional royalties and ownership opportunities.

Hope to hear back from you soon.
