V12 Forum

Having been ready and waiting to buy the V12 as soon as it released for about the past 4 Months I now find that I don't have the time to start working on it. In addition I am now reconsidering some other engines that I had previously either overlooked or been unimpressed with.

So it would be nice to get some real feedback on how people are going with V12 so I can make a more informed decision when the time comes.

But of couse everyone that has V12 is now posting on the private forum (which I am very much in favour of) and I already have plenty of opinions from people who are/were just speculating. Also if heaps of people reply to this thread with "get it its great, trust me" that won't help much either.

What would be really nice is some sort of limited access to the private forum. Maybe read only access to some areas?

Any chance of getting that GG?

Well it depends on what type of game you are making, if you read this thread you can see a few of the pros/cons:

The tools for V12 are hard to use at the moment. The community is working on it as we speak, and there are quite a few talented ex tribes/tribes2 coders/modders helping the rest of us come up to speed. Plainly and simply the engine rocks. Its only drawback is lack of documentation, which is changing. If your game world needs to have awesome lighting and render only indoor scenes, you need to use UT/LiThtech or Serious Sam. I am totally pleased with my purchase of the V12, for 100.00 you get solid SCRIPTABLE game engine comparable to Unreal/LiThtech/SS and Quake etc.

In a nutshell.. you can not loose at the price/performance/quality/community this thing has to offer.

This is a great deal. I personally think the engine is much better than anything else out there. Here are some pros and cons for you:

Pro:
1. It only costs $100!!
2. The community is growing, and is very active and supportive. A week after release there are 3 or 4 tutorials, and people working on almost every major problem.
3. The engine is great. Lots of features, lots of optimization.
4. There are tools... :)
5. The garage games guys are very dedicated. They answer alot of questions on the forums, and are working hard to make this thing as functional as possible.
6. Every major con can be, and is being, worked upon by developers. Most of the negatives willbe gone very soon.
Con:
1. It costs $100... :)
2. The tools are occasionally buggy, or disfunctional. Mainly the dts exporter, though the map thing crashed on me a few times. It is still usable though.(exporter is being fixed)
3. Documentation is lacking. But you can always look to the Tribes II scripts for examples, or just treace the code to see what it is doing. There are comments, but not always, and there is no general documentation (they are fixing this now).

That is really all I can think of. There isnt much wrong with it. I say that it was DEFENITELY worth it.

Thanks for the replies, especially the cons encountered so far (I am already aware of the pros that were mentioned - although I am pleased to hear that the forum is well supported).

It would still be nice to "eavesdrop" on the forum though. But since I don't think that will be forthcoming can you please answer a more direct question.

Do you foresee that most of your coding will be modification of existing classes or creating new classes through inheritance? ie. is there a good selection of useful base classes?

I realise this probably depends a lot on your programming style and what you want to do and is probably a hard question to answer at this stage. Perhaps a better question would be can you descibe the coding style of the engine as it is. Any vague comments would be helpful...
