Adventure Game Engine for programers
by Renzo Sanchez · in General Discussion · 08/20/2003 (1:59 pm) · 13 replies
Hello. I will make a 3D adventure game (freeware). We will give this game in a TV program for free.
I know C++ and DirectX.
I've already read forums post about game engine for not programers. I need a good game engine ($0 - $3000) for programers in order to make a game like King Quest.
It is an adventure game with a 3d character in a 3d world.
I have 6 months to finish the game with 6 programmers. I have all art, sound, 3d characters, etc.
Any help please.
Thanks.

RE might be the right choice, if you need mp/terrain and a few other things you will need to add them youself.

Can I make an adventure game like King Quest in Torque without not much difficult? I mean, of cource I will hace to programm in C, but a good programmer can make an adventure game using Torque?

IE:
would you make a tetris game with TGE or RE? I would use RE, no need for terrain and the other features of TGE.

By all means yes, my thought was that all the features in TGE would be overkill for what your looking to-do. I am not in any way downplaying TGE.. TGE is good for just about any game out their, but for some it is overkill.IE:

What do you think about Power Render?
I think is a good choose in order to make an adventure game like King Quest.
Do you think I should buy Power Render?
Thanks.

You are right. I think TGE is a good game engine. If I have to make a game like Counter Strike (FPS with network) I'll choouse Torque, but I am not sure for making and adventure. What do you think about Power Render?

Marble Blast, Orbz and ThinkTanks are all made with Torque and are definitely not FPS
It's the most complete engine in your price range, afaik.
As Ron says it depends on what features you want for your adventure game : we're going for a full 3D interactive world, and are happy to be mostly able to concentrate on the game rather than building our own technology.
Seeing as you say you only have a 3 months dev cycle, I don't think you'll find another engine at the same price that covers all bases...

Power Render is just a graphics engine, iirc. Torque is a complete game engine, and is not just for FPS : I'm presently working on an adventure game using Torque.Marble Blast, Orbz and ThinkTanks are all made with Torque and are definitely not FPS

What do you think about:
Renderware
Ndl
OpenGVS
Do you advice me another engine to develop a 3D adventure game.
Thanks.

$10,000 is an awful lot to pay for a game engine. Especially when you're making a freeware game.
But you mentioned only having 6 months to work on it and having 6 programmers. So I guess you must plan to make money from it somehow.
Either that or you're extremely well-funded.
I would tell you to go with something cheap (i.e. < $500) since you have 6 programmers to make it work.
But I don't really know anything about 3d adventure game engines.

This is better than finding out you'll need to add things to your game engine. You can click to move things in Torque. You can do complex animation in Torque. You can have rich and detailed worlds to move around in... in Torque.
It also has a rich scripting language and a powerful GUI system, both of which are important for an adventure game.

I think that Torque would be a very good choice for an adventure game project. Worst case, it will be overkill and you'll end up not using a lot of functionality. This is better than finding out you'll need to add things to your game engine. Keep in mind, these are my personal views and are not intended to be a dig against TGE, RE or any other engine out their.

I am still sitting on the fence here :) yes, with TGE you would just end up not using a lot of things. I see the need for TGE with Orbz, TT and MarbleBlast they require features of the engine that RE does not currently have. If you do something like Zelda, then TGE would be overkill (IMHO). I would be more inclined to use RE for a games like Zelda, puzzel games and arcade type clones.Keep in mind, these are my personal views and are not intended to be a dig against TGE, RE or any other engine out their.

I've worked with Renderware for a few years now, and I find it to be far better than anything else I've tried. Especially with the addition of Renderware Studio, which is an incredibly powerful editor and game framework. When it comes to support, Renderware is excellent as well. And over the last few years, they've really improved the documentation, so by now, it is actually really good.
Among other things, I've used Renderware to make a 3d adventure game: www.adventurearchiv.de/r/rosemondreviewe.htm.

If you can afford Renderware, the choice is easy. I'd take Renderware any day.I've worked with Renderware for a few years now, and I find it to be far better than anything else I've tried.
