Teen Going Indie

by Deshawn Brown · in General Discussion · 11/22/2010 (7:07 pm) · 1 replies

Is it possible for a teen like myself to join an indie game studio? Not like the big company's out their, but a small team that be looking for people to join them as they are working on a game idea themselves. I'm not really interested in making big bucks, but simply just trying to gain some experience and have a playable game in my portfolio. I also wanted to know if their is any age restrictions when it comes to joining a small indie team rather than just going in on my own.

It depends on many factors. If the indie team has formed a small business (as in a registered/licensed or incorporated business) then they have to follow certain guidelines in terms of employment. If they have contracts or NDAs then being under 18 or 21 (what ever the legal adult age is where you live is) will mean your parents will have to sign off on your behalf.

If the indie team has not formed a small business, then its basically up to the team members (with not so much strict paperwork or guidelines involved). But even then, if the game is going to be sold commercially it may get a little sticky once money starts changing hands (and again parents may be required to become involved if the person is under the legal adult age).

Now if the indie team is simply making a game for the sake of making it (without commercial interests) then you should have no problems finding a team like that.

It will basically be "what do you bring to the table" that the team is looking for, and it will be your skills or knowledge that's the deciding factor.
