I saw that you used the "free app of the day" feature of Openfeint. Did it work in terms of sales (after the "free" day)? We are thinking if we should do it now or another time with new upgrades (not yet planned though).
Still finding very difficult to promote the app.

We had 90,000 downloads as part of the free app and since then we average 25 sales a week. Before that we were lucky to have 1 or 2 a day. Number of weekly sales is slowly improving as well. I don't know if free app is responsible but we certainly got a lot of interest.

Thanks for sharing.

I wasn't expecting so many downloads, which is a good thing, so better to be sure to get it right and don't rush into it.Thanks for sharing.

I'd advise to contact them now as it can take up to 3 months before you get a slot. That way you're in the queue with plenty of time to prepare. Also, if you have a second game then you will want to cross promote with the free app.

I did Free App A Day with War Evolved, and posted my thoughts/results here. For War Evolved, I got lucky and it paid off. At the time, FAAD was about $1500, and that isn't anything compared to the current prices ~($2000-$6000). I don't think it is worth it in that price range.
If I were you, I would also look at Free App Calendar. While Free App Calendar doesn't have as big of an audience, it is considerably cheaper ($195). It also isn't as busy so you are more likely to get the day that you want. I did a little bit of research on Free App Calendar, and if the app that you give away for free is any good at all, it will definitely reach the top charts. I would be surprised if W.I.P. didn't. And for only $195, I don't see any reason not to do it.

I don't know how much how much free game a day with OpenFeint costs, but if it is an upfront fee I would seriously consider doing your research first. If OpenFeint takes a percentage of the earnings after the promotion, then ignore the rest of this post :)I did Free App A Day with War Evolved, and posted my thoughts/results here. Justin, the OF is free but they take 50% of your revenue for 21 days after the free day has finished. I think you did very well with Free App A Day; more downloads and better post day sales than IWT, however I think it is probably because War Evolved has greater appeal and a larger target demographic than IWT. On the day that IWT was free there was also a free app a day app (BBQ something or other) and that didn't reach the same rankings as IWT - it still did okay for a BBQ app! WRT to W.I.P. there is great potential there because as a game it also has a broader audience IMO.

I think we will try first OpenFeint and see how it goes.
