DAZ 3D is putting together a contest

DAZ 3D is putting together a contest and needs some input from the Torque community.

DAZ 3D has already announced that new "game-friendly" licensing is available for game developers on all the content at developer.daz3d.com and that game developer tools are available to make DAZ 3D models "game-friendly".

DAZ 3D has also announced the availability of game-ready content that is optimized specifically for Torque3D.

Now DAZ 3D would like to put together a contest to see who can come up with the best game character using DAZ 3D models and/or tools.

It is expected that the contest will kick off in the next 4-6 weeks but DAZ 3D would be interested in community input on some questions still being kicked around such as:

How much time is needed to create a good low-poly character for a game?

What kind of prizes would encourage the most participation?

Torque 3D Pro licenses
Passes to GDC
Expenses toward GDC trip
Cash - How much is enough?
DAZ 3D Tools - Bryce, Carrara, Hexagon, DAZ Studio Advance, etc.

If something like this would be interesting to you please provide some input and thoughts on the idea.

Its actually a very good idea, i think around here a t3d pro license or daz tools would be a cool prize, the time frame for a good low poly charactor is fairly difficult to really estimate though as it really depends on the specs and what the deffinition of 'low poly' is now a days. you can take a page from the play books of websites like www.gameartisans.org who regularly do charactor art competitions. one is going on now called the comicon challange and there time frame was 6 weeks...

Tools for free and cash, in that order, are great prizes :)

Tickets of any sort rule out a lot of people, but nice art tools are forever.

Thanks for bringing up the topic of specs. Initially the idea was to try for good looking but functional models between 15-20k tri's. Is that a reasonable range for T3d?

15-20k is reasonable nowadays for FPS style games 20k being on the very high end, 10-15 for a player avatar is probably more realistic, now you also will need to think spec wise about what type of maps, I am assuming a normal mapped player with specular? If sculpting comes into the game (which is typical for charactors at that high res) then 6-8 weeks would probably be a good time table for experienced artists dealing with a competition +life,

if you want a wider array of artists, maybe a little longer to concept and build a player character.

Also what are the requirements for using DAZ on this competition, is there something we need to purchase, as that will limit the field or do we just need to incorporate daz studio (which if i am not mistaken is free) into the creation pipeline?

I am assuming the purpose of this competition is to bring exposure to daz from the artist communities but if a purchase is required to enter you will need to make sure that is clear, and realize some will not enter because of that...

Will there still be a contest?
