Should I upgrade to Pro?

by Muir Hamilton · in Torque 3D Professional · 10/02/2010 (10:08 pm) · 2 replies

I currently have Torque 3D Individual, and was thinking upgrading to Pro, however, I'm not sure what the advantage is. I can modify the shaders and everything from my game (right?), so why would I need the source?

About the author

I'm 16, and I love doing game art. I prefer art to anything else, I don't have the patience for most coding, and I haven't bothered to learn much of 3DsX. I hope to have gamedev of some sort as a career in the future..

... well, if you're not going to tinker with the source code ... and you're not going to merge Resources into the source code ... and you're not desperately in need of the newer editors (which will be passed along to binary users eventually) ... and you don't want/need early access to betas ... then maybe you should leave things as they are for now.

Think of it this way. If you are never planning on making a sales worthy version of the game you are making. (Because without source it is hard to simplify classes so they run smother). If the T3D is on sale, I'd grab it if you could. It doesn't go on sale often. It may never go on sale again. If you can save the cash and get access to make engine changes expand how a GUI works so it does more, you can make it do exactly what you want it to do. Now, don't get me wrong you have a lot to learn. Just reading the source code of this engine will teach you many things about programming in C/C++. It is a great learning experience as well.
