Can I use the engine to do this?

Hello,

I'd like to purchase either the 2d or 3d Torque package, but I'm not sure which would be the more correct path.

I'd like to create a game with a fixed overhead viewpoint (like most popular RTS games such as starcraft 2 and red alert 3)

I'd like to be able to allow for some realtime zooming of the page so I can see more of the map
I'd also like to be able to include some fogging and maybe cloud effects and maybe realtime day/night changing (like the GTA Vice City games)

My hope is that the 2d engine can handle all these things, as the viewpoint is more or less topdown isometric, but I'd like to be sure that i'm going down the right path at the beginning.

(I'd prefer to use the 2d package!)

Many Thanks

Welcome Cedric,

I take it your new here to the forums! Welcome! Torque X 2D and 3D have actually been merged into one product now, Torque X.
So that takes which choice out of the equation ;-)

The future of torque x is in a transitory phase at the moment. Instant action are not porting TX to XNA 4.0 and this has led to a massive community effort to take the engine forward. Led by Pino, the Community Enhanced Version (CEV) has been created. This however, is only available to licensee holders of Torque X. Have a look here:

Hope this points you in the right direction ;-)

Thanks for the reply.

I'll have a look at the Torque X.

Is the X version just for XNA development?

Yes, TorqueX is only for the XNA platform. I've seen actually a number of RTS projects in blogs on this site, that were started with one of the other engines, or the RTS kit. So if thats what you are looking for, you may want to start there. There was actually talk of a finished RTS kit being released a while back for TX, but for some reason it never happened.

Good luck!
