Your opinion of XBLIG?

Hi, personally I am a glass is half full person when it comes to XBLIG. But I know there are problems with the service. When I was developing it was either XBLIG or making iphone apps. I chose indie games. I personally like the service because at the end of the day you are making an Xbox game. What does everybody think?

I'm a "Where's the glass‽" person. XBLIG isn't available in my country, yet we have Microsoft's marketing machinery pushing their console constantly. All the hardware for Xbox 360 gets here really soon after US releases (games can sometimes take half a year or more, though). I can join the dev program and get access, but my fellow countrymen can't play any games I make available there.

Does it sound like a third-world country to you? Surprisingly, I'm not in Ulan Bator - I'm in Norway! What's most baffling is that neighbouring countries with not much higher population do have XBLIG access for the common user. It's as if they're not even trying.

Yeah, I wish XBLIG was available in more countries.

XBLIG is "great".

It's absolutely fantastic for developers starting out to get a chance to learn developing for the platform at their own speed. It also allows a large amount of creative control...

...But let's be honest, to be seen in XBLIG you either have to shine bright, or beg hard. Most titles are pushed to the back of the line within a couple of days, and virtually never heard from again.

The plus side? You've made a small amount of money, and have an excellent representation of your skills on one of the most popular platforms of this generation.

<silly>And who knows, maybe your game has enough to get mentioned on some weblog ring/forum/Digg-esque site and gets the attention that both you and it deserve. You are instantly hired as CEO of your favorite game company and you spend the rest of your days relaxing along the temperate, sandy beach of your choice sipping Bahama Mama's until the cows come home.</silly>

TL;DR- I think XBLIG is a great idea and am very thankful for it's implementation. Unfortunately, publishing a game is unlikely to get you more than coffee money and quite an impressive badge on your portfolio.

STILL TL;DR - Great idea, don't expect too much out of it.

Yeah if it wasn't for XBLIG I probably wouldnt even be doing this. The whole idea of making a game for a gaming platform is much more appealing then a normal computer arcade game.

Income: From what I have read, XBLIG income is based on a couple things. 1)Game quality We have all seen the variety that XBLIG brings. 2)Publicity Get the title out there on gaming sites, forums, where ever you can. This way when it does get published, they want it.

If you get those two things nailed out, then you shouldn't have much problem staying on the XBLIG lists for a while, and that could end up meaning BIG bucks.

If you game = fun then your game will = $$$.

But my question, is money the primary reason of publishing an XBLIG game?

@Ray Batts...no...not money...sustenance and freedom are the primary reason.

We're all willing to work for a living...and while we'd all love Ferraris, we'd also be content with just being able to feed our families, pay our bills, and shelter our loved ones with income from our games.

We'd all be better at making games if our re$pon$ibilitie$ didn't get in the way.

I think in the end...the drive to put out the game comes from the old adage:

"Do what you love...and you'll never work a day in your life"

"re$pon$ibilitie$" Good work :)

Personally XBLIG to me is

50% Personal satisfaction - like climbing a mountain
30% Creating something somebody will enjoy
20% Money - We can all dream.

I never imagined I would actually be making games before a year and a half ago.

XBLIG has just given me the chance to have fun and make some games (granted, I've got 3 unfinished projects. One day I will release!) and if I can make enough to just scrape by I would be happy if I wouldn't have to work in retail sales anymore :D.

Here's to hoping :)
