Heres the situation I'm in, I'm making a game in collaboration with the producers of a very popular comic strip. They are worried that by publishing this game through GG, GG would then get the rights to their characters. They need to make sure that they retain complete ownership of all their characters and concepts and everything. I'm pretty sure they would (just from reading the forums and news posts about the license), but right now I'm dealing with their business guy and of course he wants to see it written down in perfectly legible law bable that GG wont get ownership of the comic if we publish through them

Well the main thing is that I need a written statement from GG that says point blank that publishing through them does not entitle them to any of the intelectual property of the game, or rights to use any of the characters, concepts or whatever for their own purposes.Heres the situation I'm in, I'm making a game in collaboration with the producers of a very popular comic strip. Your best bet is to shoot an email to Jeff though.
I just found this thread that answers your question.

Still email Jeff about any specifics though.

I'm 99.9% sure that I read that GG does NOT take the rights of your ip when publishing your game. Your best bet is to shoot an email to Jeff though.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction Michael, that was written back when they had the non developer friendly license and he still claimed that they wouldnt take ownership of any IP, I'm gonna take your advice and email jeff anyway but I feel pretty confident that things are fine

Yeah, I sent that to the business guy, but I think he was more looking for the sort of thing thats 10 pages of law talk with all the little details and such, Like the part of the publishing contract (the one that GG would have me sign if I published with them) that deals with the IP specifics, if I could get that it would be great.

Why don't you phone them ? Check long distance information for Eugene, Oregon

Just playing devil's advocate: Even if they said all IP belonged to GG (Which that page and other statements made by them say it does not), would you stop making your game?
I'm just curious. :-)

Eric, are you guys really that close to finishing? Or just getting your "ducks in a row"? Just playing devil's advocate: Even if they said all IP belonged to GG (Which that page and other statements made by them say it does not), would you stop making your game?

It sounds like Eric wants to add the comic to his game. The owner of the comic is worried, not Eric (I think).

Yeah, the game is based on the comic, its not a very sophisticated game and it will probably be done in a month or two. I personaly am not worried about the IP issue, I've been hanging around here for well over a year, I feel I know and trust that GG has my interest at heart, the fact that they say they wont own the IP is good enough for me, but the other party doesnt know GG, is used to getting screwed over by lawyers every month and wants to see the actual terms of the contract written down in plain english so they know there wont be any surprises later down the road. I would like to get this resolved pretty soon, if it turns out I cant publish through GG I would probably look elswhere or just wrap up the game where it is now and release it for free, either way I'd like to know where I stand.

Oops. I missed that post! I can see the guy's concern--especially since he's probably never even heard of GG and the Indie movement. ;-)Thanks John.

We do not get more legal than this until we actually start talking in more depth about publishing your game.
