Sound problem - repeating sounds

I have a small problem with Think Tanks' sound. Much of the time when I play I get a sound error that manifests itself as a sound repeating over and over. Sometimes it's the shooting noise, sometimes the crash noise, but it can be just about anything. The sound eventually goes away when that sound is again played "in game." So if the sound of someone shooting at me is repeating, when that same sound "really" happens because someone is shooting at me, the repeating sound stops.
From a subjective, non-technical, viewpoint it sounds like the repeating sound of my tank moving (the squeaky noise) somehow gets confused and starts playing other sounds also/instead.
I'm using a WinXP, and Asus nForce2 motherboard with an Audigy sound card (no nForce2 audio). The motherboard, sound card, and video card all have the latest drivers. I'm running DirectX 8.1.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would say about 90% of the time, because from time to time I surprising note that the sound is fine. But it usually only lasts for a game or two like that, then goes bad again.

We have not experienced this before, so it may take a while for us to track down what might be causing this.

Hmm.. Can you mail your system specs and a report of this to support@bravetree.com? It would be great if you could run dxdiag.exe from the command line and send us the output file.We have not experienced this before, so it may take a while for us to track down what might be causing this.

Thanks for the prompt replies!

No problem. Tonight when I get home I'll do just that (including the dxdiag report). Thanks for the prompt replies!

In single player, a different, additional, error is noted. A few times a minute a very short, fast, burst of static is heard, and while this happens, the screen hesitates. Sometimes they come in bursts, and sometimes they don't happen at all. The other, repeating noise, is still there, too.
I thought that perhaps there was a problem with my machine, so I tried some things out of ThinkTanks.
I tried some other games to see if they also exhibited the error. Quake III, WarCraft III, and Dungeon Siege all seem to run fine, with no sound problems. I also did a run of MemTest86 v3.0 against the machine that found no errors, as well as the SiSoft Sandra burn in tool, which did not fail.
I also tried running the game in Windows 98 Compatability mode, which did not help the problem.

Here's a little more information, in the interest of potentially narrowing down the issue. In single player, a different, additional, error is noted. Hi Joseph. Do you have a previous version of ThinkTanks? If you do and it works fine, could you try the following experiment for me? Back up the game/data/sound directory in your new version (you can simply rename it sound2) and then copy in the same folder from the older version of ThinkTanks. One of the differences between 1.1 and earlier versions is that in 1.1 we converted the sounds from wav format to ogg format to save space on the download (a few megs). But we have in the past experienced odd issues with ogg format, so this could be one of them. We'll continue to try to get to the bottom of this. It might be that more recent version of OpenAl or the ogg vorbis library will fix the problem for you...clark

Unfortuntely, I don't have a previous version of ThinkTanks. The 1st version I bought was 1.1, and I recently upgraded to the 1.2 version. I may try getting a new Ogg Vorbis driver, though. Thanks,
Joe

We just upgraded from 1.02 to 1.1, so you must have had the 1.02 before. That would be the one with the wav's instead of the ogg's. BTW, if you do replace the ogg driver and/or openal driver, it's the dll's in the ThinkTanks directory that matter, not the ones in your system directories (they can be in both places, but the exe directory takes precedence).

The Ogg thing I will do, though.
Thanks again,

Ah, right, I had a bit of confusion on the version numbers there, and I do have a copy of that 1.02 version, but that problem was happening before the upgrade, too, so I don't think that could be it. I might give it a try, though, on a lark. The Ogg thing I will do, though.
Thanks again,

Next up, the Ogg Vorbis Dlls.

I tried a new version of the OpenAL.dll (5.12.1.244) and it does work a bit better. The short burst of static is gone, but the repeating sounds still happens, but, it seems subjectively, less often than before. But it was pretty random before, so it may have just been the few session I did with the new .DLL worked better than normal.Next up, the Ogg Vorbis Dlls.
