Free RPGs?

by Steve Fletcher · in General Discussion · 08/03/2003 (2:46 pm) · 7 replies

Has anyone played any good RPGs that are free for download? I can find tons of RPGs on the internet, but alot of them aren't much fine.

Some particulars:

I want it to be a non-internet game, since I don't have easy access to the internet.

I can only easily play mouse-controlled RPGs. This issue is that I'm prone to carpel tunnel syndrome, and I bought a device for controlling the mouse without my hands. But I have no such device for controlling the keyboard.

My 2 favorite RPGs are Fallout and Fallout 2. I did NOT like Baldur's Gate very much for 2 reasons: combat was pseudo-realtime, and it used D&D's rules (which I dislike for a variety of reasons).

So I want a non-internet, mouse-controlled RPG with turn-based combat.

Though it has real-time combat, I suggest Dink Smallwood to anyone who likes rpgs.

It's available at http://rtsoft.com/ .

You could try the demo versions of Spiderweb Software's games:
http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/

The Exile trilogy addicted me back in the day, and it looks like they've updated the engine, and released the same (excellent) plots under the name "Avernum".
The Exile games are entirely turn-based, and can be completely controlled with the mouse.

The demos are shareware, and the cost of the full versions are a (non-literal) trifle! :)

I'll second the suggestion for Dink Smallwood. One of the best freeware RPG's i've played. Great Fun.

Actually, I've already seen Spiderweb's games. The Avernum trilogy looks good, but I decided to play Geneforge instead. It's newer and (in my opinion) better.

In fact, Geneforge is one of the only 2 games I've bought in the past year. And Geneforge 2 is out for the Macintosh, but I'm waiting for the PC version.

So, essentially, I was looking for something to play until Geneforge 2 is done.

Maybe I should try out Nethergate. I can at least play the demo now, and then buy it at the same time as Geneforge 2 if I like it.

Just a warning to everyone: the game "Homeland", which is on Spiderweb's site isn't much fun. I played it for a while, but it gets too tedious later on. So stick to Spiderweb's other games.

That egoboo game looks pretty cool, and it's free. I'm downloading it now.

Obviously, I haven't played it yet though.

Wow, I liked Spider Webs games a lot and I never really like to play single player RPGs. Ill play em all. :)
