Legends goes beta!

After almost two years of work, my game, Legends, has finally gone beta. It was released at the UVALAN5 Tribes lan party today, and later on publicly. It is a very Tribes 1-like game, but with the graphics of Tribes 2. Feel free to try it out here:

We also have a bugtracker in the (un)likely even that you find a bug. If you do, please report it to hosted.tribalwar.com/legends/bugtracker and include the console.log in your Legends directory. On the main page and on the bug tracker are lists of known issues that you can browse through so you know what to look for.
Have fun! :)

Otherwise, great job! :)

Looks good. However it isn't smooth on my P3-700 + 256Mb + GeForce 2GTS. I don't know if it's due to lag, the server or just because my PC is too old and crap. But it isn't playable, as when the action is frantic the FPS drops to less than 15 on my PC. But if you're targetting newer hardware then I wouldn't worry about it.Otherwise, great job! :)

A GeForce 2 should run it pretty well. Your ram is probably what's keeping your framerate from being very high. Try lowering your texture settings.

(A side note: Legends seems to have a bit of a memory leak; it takes up 350megs on my system after an hour's play! So it may be that later versions will perform rather better...)

Development build is a better name for it. Sorry.

Beta? If this is beta, then Sierra marketing will hire you guys soon....Development build is a better name for it. Sorry.

The very fact that you, a non-member of the Legends team can download it, test it, and submit feedback and bug reports, makes it a Beta.
What are you sorry for ?

I was actually suprised at how much was done on it: Various weapons, shockwaves, explosions, armors, and those very cool fade-in loading screens. Considering I hadn't heard a word on it since Sierra announced they were re-releasing tribes, and thus thought it was a dead project, they've done quite well! -EricF

But this game lacks _so_ much that imho it doesnt qualify for the label "beta" - or even alpha (feature complete and ready for inhouse testing), as this cannot honestly be feature complete. E.g. team score on the hud (this is a team game, right?).
I dont want to sound too negative, and I do congratulate the guys behind this for releasing a game (not easy). But if this is what they envisioned as a completed game, then I'm not impressed.

Ken: if the game had been feature complete, then you are right. A feature complete product that is released to the public for testing is typically labelled beta. But this game lacks _so_ much that imho it doesnt qualify for the label "beta" - or even alpha (feature complete and ready for inhouse testing), as this cannot honestly be feature complete. Thomas - rest assured, this is _not_ all they have planned. It's only just past the event horizon where it starts being fun to play...

We've added as much into the engine itsself as we needed to to get the basic gameplay functioning.
Hobbiticus has been doing some amazing stuff with the engine.
We're already receiving contributions in the form of script fixes, and art from the public, and most of them are being integrated back into Legends.
Legends is organic, and not a studio game, whatsoever. There's no "company" behind legends. Just us T2/T1 fans.
So yes, it's not complete, but by releasing a stable engine catering for the gameplay requirements the momentum has picked up.
For the players, by the players. And free. You can consider it an "open script" project. Now, I'm pretty sure you of all people realize that Apache version 0.1 was basically NCSA httpd. But the open-source community started adding on to it.
If the NCSA code hadn't ever been released, then what would you be running now? IIS?
It's the same with legends. We couldn't continue forever internally... It had to be opened up.

Thom, yes there's still lots to be done. But from the word go, Legends was intended to be a "community" project. We've added as much into the engine itsself as we needed to to get the basic gameplay functioning.
